Reading, p. 25-28

Now that you have read about the Hebrew people, consider their relative importance to world history. Their story has 3 1/2 out of almost 1,000 pages in your textbook and yet some historians consider their story one of the most significant in western history. What do you think is their significance? Do these relatively powerless people even deserve a mention alongside more powerful groups, such as the Assyrians?

i believe that they do deserve mention. they were a very important part in history. had it not been for the Hebrews, the world would not be the same. there would be no jewish people. all the jewish people would not be here now which would would make a huge difference. history would not be the same. also, judaism influence other religions such as islam and Christianity. the world might still be polytheistic. that would be extreamly different. that is how hebrews impacted history and how they deserve a spot in the pages of our textbook.

The Hebrew people made significant contributions to important world religions, specifically the idea of one God, the Old Testament, and Judaism, which led to other religions like Christianity. The conflicts in the Middle East are all over the news, and one way to understand why problems still exist is to learn about the history of the area, including the history of the land of Israel and the Hebrew people. Their history gave important developments in religion that are still powerful today. Their study may be just as important, if not more important than the other groups.

If any other group of people is given a mention, then why shouldn't the Hebrew people get one? They were of signifigance in the same way as the other peopl. If it weren't for them, there would be no judaism. Also, as Justin stated, they influenced other religions such as Christinity which many people follow. So, if they were able to get so many people in one way or another to follow them, then of course they deserve a mention.

The Hebrew peoples deserve mention alongside more powerful groups, because they were influencial in the development of other religions besides Judaism. Many aspects of Judaism are seen in Christianity and also Islam. Enriching the Jewish tradition would be a concern to all humanity, as the book points out. The belief in an elimination of war and violence was practiced. This belief continued to be shared by more and more people.

I believe the Hebrews definitely deserve mention in history, and mentioned now. Jewish people are just as important, obviously, to the rest of the religions and people. Not only do they give great value to the society but they influence other religions. Like Justin said they were components to the rise of Christianity. The most relevant, and I believe important aspect of this topic, is that the Hebrews are around, and just as powerful in today’s world. All the early destruction and challenges they faced in the first years of the religion to be around to day is cool and stuff.

The Hebrew people made a very significant impact because not only did bring about monotheism, but Judaism was also a spring board for other religions such as Christianity and as Justin said Islam. The Hebrew people brought religion into a new era, it wasn’t based on many gods and it was peace and not war. Judaism helped unite the Hebrew people, as did other monotheistic religions.

i do believe that the hebrew people deserve alot of credit and mention, and are very important to history. i think that one of the reasons that Judiesm is significant, is because they were able to take on and survive the horrors of time. Throughout time, the hebrew people have been captured, abused and killed time after time by new conquerers. And yet, theyre view of of monothesim with a god who enforces the concepts of love and mercy. Another reason why i think that the hebrew people played a significant role in history is that this religon is resposible for the ten commandments.

I believe absolutly 100% with Justin and Katelyn. They absolutely nailed it. I mean without the Hebrew people, they wouldn't of made certain influences on other major Religions. As Katelyn said they influenced the Old testament which Christianity and the belief of one god. They brought forth many scholarly manuscripts as well. They definately now that I think about it, they deserve much more of the book because of how much they contributed.

Judaism should be acknowledged as the foundation to Christianity; most people do not see them so and do not give them enough credit. Rock on Jewish people you guys is cool. Furthermore the Jewish people created a monotheistic religion, and Islam has Judaism to thank for its beliefs as well.

I believe that the Hebrews most definately deserve a mention. Just because there not as powerful as other groups doesn't mean they don't deserve a metion. They had many contributions. For one, without the Hebrews, there would be no Jewish people. Our world would be very different without Jewish people. Judiasm also consisted of the belief of one god which is also a great contribution. Judiasm also influenced Christianity and Islam just like Justin said. The Hebrew people had many influences and contributions, and for that reason deserve to be mentioned.

I think their significance is important not necessarily about what they did but how long they have lived. It seems that they really have seen the worst a time but they have seen more of time then some other religions have so even through all these years of hardship they still come out strong as ever. Although they are not a powerful people they are people that definitely endure.

(Noone so far thinks that the Hebrew people do not deserve a mention, just saying)

Well, I guess to hop on the bandwagon, the Hebrew people do deserve a mention because they are up there with the long lasting religions in a long time, and plus, as a few people have said, they have helped influence a number of other religions. The Hebrews have so much to share with others that it is unbeleivable, and yet, no body really mentions them, when they should.

Mr. Yip

Ok, I have read several comments and there appears to be a common theme - the Hebrews were important because they influenced Christianity. However, I could make a case that Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, and other early religions influenced Christianity. Yet, we do not spend much (or any) time on these other religions.

Christianity certainly developed from Judaism but that does not explain why these people are significant. Manichaeism may have had at least as strong an influence on Christian thinking as Judaism. So why the Hebrews and not the Manichaeans?

It is because the Hebrews were a distinct group of people that had a massive inmpact on the area in which they roamed upon. They never really settled down in a certain area untill 1200 and 1000 BCE that they established the United Kingdom of Israel. Before then, they had impacted the Egyptians and Palestinian peoples.

i think that they should be mentioned because, as i said in class they a; gave the world laws based on ethics and morality (as well as breaking the grip of the "wheel of life" that dominates polytheistic religions) and b; the bible is an anthropologists dream. it is a history of a people (albeit a mythologized one). the ten commandments are oneof the most important breakthroughs in history. also, the fact that these laws would later influence the most powerful empires in history, from arab to american. i the bible is a story of survival and a source of inspiration. opressed people could look at the plight of the hebrews and say, "were just like the chosen people".
also, the millitary stratagies and doctrines that were used by moses, joshua and david were influential. i wont get to in depth, but the hebrews more-or-less created geurilla warfare.

Hebrews in a way can be stated that their significance appears because of influental acts upon other religions. Certainly not fully influenced a religion but contributed a small part that linked to others that contributed too. They were also able to survive fortunately for long periods of time conflicts after conflicts arousing at the momment.

The Hebrews deserve mention because of the influence they had on other people. The concept of monotheism was brought to attention by the Hebrews. Judaism enabled other religions to be developed and created due to their influence. Judaism served as a stepping stone for unfounded philosophies.

The hebrews were very signifigant. No mattter how many times they were put into slavery and had their kingdoms conquered, they kept their religion going. They persevered through everything. Also, their religion was very influential on later ones such as christianity. The hebrews used the idea of one god. The fact that they were powerless and still survived and impacted their area makes them signifigant. Other religions, when faced with hard times end up being lost in the chaos and are never built up agian, but the hebrews managed to kepp their religion under control over many years.

They do deserve mention. The hebrews made an important impact on history as othes have said. Without the Hebrews, there wouldn't be the jews, the christians, the islam or any type of monotheistic religion. Also, many people follow the religion of their LORD their God today. Everything would be different without the Hebrews.

I think that the hebrews were very significant. Many historical events and ideas would not be the same without jewish people and their concepts of monotheistic religion. Also, a big contribution was the 10 commandments that set moral standards. Hebrews deserve as much mention along other powerful groups because they are unique and different but that also goes for the Assyrains so they should both be equal.

The Hebrew people are extremely important because of they're contributions to world culture and world religion, such as the Old Testament, the concept of Monotheism, and many others. Abraham, the "father" of the Jewish people, is the starting point of the three main western religions in the world, Chistianity, Islam, and Judaism. These Abrahmic religions shaped the western world through their beliefs, and the world would be entirely different without the Hebrew People.

i dont believe that the hebrews deserve historical significance. they had a long history of oppression that led to many rebellions, escapes, and battles. i believe that their strength was not in their religous beliefs and its influence. but more so the military prowess of generals such as joseph. was it not for the fierceness of his battle techniques they would have quickly succumbed to invading peoples. in addition to their military victories, the story of their amazing escape from egypt left a mark on western civilization. the focus of all the previous blogs has been about judaism's influence of other religions, but i agree with mr yip that there must be another reason. there are others early religions that contributed just as much to christianity and they dont get mentions. im going to stop talking because im starting to rant but im sure you get my point. ramzi out.

Of course the Hebrew people deserve mention. The world would be completely different without. I think everything that happened in the past is relevant. Like many other people I agree there would not have been Jewish people, they influenced christianity and Islam the most popular religouns on earth. And the idea of one peaceful and loving god was deffinateley new idea for the world at the time.
