Exit Ticket, 1/7/09
We are almost finished with Greece (Yay!). Think about their accomplishments for a few moments. After all, they gave us democracy, new views through their philosophy, advancements in the arts, Alexander's vision of a single unified culture creating a better more orderly society, etc. So now, tell me what you think was their most significant contribution to the world.

Greece has created many important values in the world that would enhance our civilization to becoming what it is today. But I believe the most important value is the early form of Democracy that Greece created. This new form of government allowed the people to choose what they wanted. Even though this new form of democracy had many flaws and disadvantages to some citizens, it would evolve over time into arguably the best form of government today. In history most nations that have democracy have been the most successful countries. This is because democracy allows ordinary people to be whatever they want to be. This creates a strong culture within the nation. It also allows people to theorize on what they want and to do what they want. This is why ancient Greece's early form of democracy is their greatest acchievement.
Greece did have many accomplishments, but the most important I would have to say is philosophy. With philosophy people can spread knowledge through generations. Also, philosophy was a base to our scientific accomplishments today, and with science you can figure out how to make anything. Because of these accomplishments we are fortunate. We were able to step foot on the moon and create the unthinkable. This shows how effective the philosopher’s teachings were. With philosophy you have the freedom of thinking for yourself and that's exactly why it has come this far. A democracy is important but It could have died down over the years, and were lucky it hadn't. Democracy is my second choice. I didn't choose it because not every country has a democracy as their form of government so how can it be significant. Many countries have used science though, which links back to the philosophers of Greece.
^ The comment above was posted by Sarah Albanese. I changed my name for less confusion.
i agree with kyle. while the philosophies were important, many of them wound up factored into democracy. the form that the greeks practiced was definatley imperfect, but that was just a founDATION WHICH ALLOWED FOR IMprovment by people like the english and romans. the freedoms allowed by liberal democracy make sure that people flow in and allow for new ideas and mingling. our reedoms is what made us (americans) great. democracy can also be seen as important because most of the leading powers were made great by their democracies. as sarah said, not all nations practice democracy today, but tell me one nation that is truly important that is not a democracy. the scientists that made importan discoveries were mostly from democratic nations who allowed them to work in peace.

I agree with Kyle in saying that the form of government, the deomcoracy was the most important contrubution made. In a democracy, people have a say. Granted the people of that time may not of had as much freedom to input their ideas, yet the USA& many other countries, expanded on that idea of democracy. I think one of the reasons that Greece had so many accomplishments was becuase of their system of government. Today, in this day and age, many countries use the democracy as their form of governemt. If several countries have a democracy, you can tell that a democracy is in fact successful. Today's democracy may be slightly or alot different from the greek democracy, the point is, is that Greece is where the idea came from. I think this one contribution, carried into this century, making it highly important. I can see where Sarah is coming from with her belief of philoshophy as the most important contrubution, but I think the democracy was more important. My reason for this is because for one, Socrates never wrote anything down, so no one can be 100% sure that his philosphoy was infact his. Another reason is because philosophies, aren't always 100% true, some choose to believe them, while others don't. I do think philosophy was important and gave a base for science, like Sarah said, I just think having a set of laws and a form of government is a more important contrubution.
Kyle and Sarah love both your veiws. I was thinking either Democracy or Philosophy and I was torn but I'm leening into Philosophy. No offence Kyle your awsome and it's not just because Sarah dresses better, but the way Sarah described philosophy makes it appeear that philosophy boils over into democracy as well. Philosophy i believe was the entity that inhanced all the views greece built up, and sent them over into greatness. With democracy it is all about people speeking on what they think is best and will give them the most success. With the tool of the views and spectrums of philosophy they could use that to intencify their democracy as well. I believe philosophy took this same roll in many of the other accomplishments as well.

I believe that the most beneficial contribution Greece made to society would be their ideas of a democracy. If you think about it, Alexander's strategy of forming unity eventually lead to an improved democratic system of governing. Alexander's ideas for unity did not last... and only made it clear that variation is necessary. Allowing peoples more personal freedoms (seen in a democracy) was built off Alexander's unrealistic intentions. Greece did not have the perfect democracy, but the basic outline of a democracy lasted all the way to modern times today. Yes, Greece came upon numerous issues with their government, but from there it only could improve! This basic way of governing for the people by the people can be sucessful for ruling a country, or even a simple school club for that matter.
I agree with Kyle and I think he put it best when stating that Greece's best contribution was the idea of democracy. I think that the idea of democracy had a big impact on the world because it is such a universal idea that is used throughout the world today. Even something as simple as a school club could use democracy with elected officials to things as large as using it as the government of our country. I thing philosophy was another great idea, but I don’t think a lot of people use philosophy then people use democracy so i believe the universal idea of democracy had a bigger impact and is such a good
I also agree with Kyle in saying that democracy was Greece's greatest and most usefull contribution to the world. Democracy is a form of government that allowed the people to have some power. Something needed to be changed from the idea of just having one ruler (most comminly a king or queen). The people of civilizations ruled by a king or queen that changed their form of government based on Greece's influences, are a perfect example of why Greece creating a democracy was so important.
Greece has shown much pecedence for the modern day. I believe the same ideal as Kyle and Bryan as the Greece contributed the idea of democracy as the greatest contribution. This allowed the freedom of choice for the citizens to vote on what they desired the most. It is greatly used as it was back in that time period. Democracy is the cradle of America's society and with the government aided them into becoming the most powerful country in the world. This is the reason why Greece's contribution of the ideal of democracy is the greatest contribution.

As many of the others have already said, democracy is pretty much the most important value Greece had given us. And as Kyle said, many of the most successful countries had a democracy as their form of government. Although, Alexander's idea of his united nation between Persia and Greece is also a big value that we learned. Just look at our country's name, The UNITED States. The idea of unity that Alexander had given us has brought many people from many different countries to our united country. Even though there is prejudice in our country we are still united because our country has not broken into separate parts. Plus its obvious that the Persians and the Greeks wouldn't have liked each other at first and some of them at all if that unity had lasted.
I think the most important value ws their contribution of philosophy. If you ask me Greek philosophy paved the way events that unfolded up to modern day times. Their idea of democracy was also important, but personally i think someone would have come up with some form of democracy eventually. But Philosophy, it brought knowledge and the idea of free thinking and really pondering the unknown and known in life. Look what philosophy did for Alexander and his father. His father reunited Greece and Alexander conquered the Persians and created the Hellenistic world. Their pbhilosophy had such an impact on today's scientific discoveries.

In my opinion the most import contribution that the Greeks had toward the world has to be Philosophy. Without the early Philosophers our world would not be what it is today. They set a foundation for their succesors who would continue the lagacy of Greek Philosophy and beliefs. The philosophers had ideas and theories that were the building blocks and fundamentals of their thriving society.
i agree with kyle. he(as you well know) said democracy was there most important contribution, which I strongly believe was the foundation upon which the rest of Greece's accomplishments were built. not only would democracy be passed down to countries today but it allowed the freedom for philosophers to philosofy and philosophicate. with a democracy people like Aristotle were allowed to teach and research and learn. if it weren't for the freedom democracy grants, Aristotle could have been a hobo cleaning the pigsty for money. then who would have taught Alexander the not as great as Justin. if Alexander the not as great as Justin hadn't been educated, who besides me would have known what would have happened. fine, i'll tell you what would have happened. he would ha died a nameless face, i would have been born 2350 years sooner, conquered the world, united it in a Justinistic, and you would have been learning about JUSTIN the GREATER THAN THE NAMELESS FACE ALEX. also you would be speaking Justinease. the extra freedom allowed people to develop culture like kyle said and be a more united country.
I believe that the most important contribution to our world today is the evolution of modern democracy. it contributed the ideas of representation in government and the power of the people to control government. their democracy had many flaws, but america has been a democracy for centuries and we still dont have it right. so i believe that the athenians' contributions in government have changed the way we live and work in maodern times.
The most significant contribution Greece structured for the world is definitely their government system of democracy. Like Kelly had said earlier, in a democracy each individual has a say. Expressing new ideas and using other’s views to incorporate an even stronger idea can bring opportunities for any ordinary person. I also agree with what Kyle stated. Of course their democracy system was not perfect at first and had a few drawbacks, but there was room for improvements, eventually which will form an advantage for citizens. Although much improved form the original Greek model, democracies stood the test of time and are still being used today.
Greece has contributed so much to our modern world, art, philosophy, government (democracy), values and lifestyle. It is hard to pick the most significant. I agree with Zack, I love both Kyle and Sarah’s comments but I think that Greece’s most significant contribution to the world today was the way Greece influenced our social culture. Greek values are still evident in our world today. Greece helped society go from a barbaric uncivilized place to a world of class and order. Now, I’m not saying that Greek culture and society was perfect. Greece had its flaws, but the values that supported Greek culture were honorable. One of the most evident values in Greece was hospitality. Hospitality is still a very evident value in society today. Greece has made so many contributions to the modern world, but the influence on our culture is the most evident by far.
I think all of the contributions that Greece made are significant. Each of the things that were introduced brought many new opportunities and ideas that began to expand even until this day.
Democracy, like Kylie mentioned and the rest, was a big contribution. It created a government that was very affective and would still work in the future. It let all the citizens have equal rights under any circumstances, as well as being involved politically by having the right to vote for your most favorable candidate in an election without needing to be part of the government. This system led future generations to great conclusions where the people, if participated, being happy with who've they chosen. The democratic system overpowers other types of government including androcracy, argentocracy, etc. It makes it a highly favorable government compared to others. But unlike any other thing democracy carried it's own disadvantages.
Philosophy brought forth powerful minds that of Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, etc. Greek philosphers created ideas and made others think beyong the boundary. Yet Kelly's point in mentioning that Socrates never left any writings, or that philosophies weren't always true convinces me that it wasn't the best.
Yet in the end my thoughts regarding the contributions that Greece has made available to the future are all equal. Each of the contributions have shaped up and made better of the future, as well as opened up new jobs, interest, ideas, and education. Art for example was studied more precisely, and enjoyed by many. It was also something very easy to do like drawing in a notebook with a simple graphite tool. Cavemens, or Homo Sapiens Sapiens utilized simple rock tools to draw on walls. Therefore, I think all are significantly equal, for all are continuing to make differences in helping in the world.
I disagree with Kyle, Alex, Kelly etc. I dont believe that democracy was the most important value that the Greeks gave us. I believe that the most important value the Greeks tought us was their views of philosophy. They started at such a vague state in which there were many variations in the views of philossphy, but they ended with such an advanced look at the world, the universe, and thy self. Each succesor dug deeper than the previous teacher and each took their own views on it. As Sarah A. had said, "people can spread knoledge through generations...philosophy was a base to our scientific accomplishments". I agree with her 100% that philosophy was the base of science, because without philosophy, the constant question of why, that constant curiosity that exists in all of us as human beings, would never have existed. With that constant curiosity, we were able to form other things such as government, science, and learn in depth about the world around us. Without philosophy, we wouldnt have had any of the other values that the Greeks gave us, so that is why philosophy was without a doubt, the most important value.
Ehh, I disagree with Kyle and all the other people who followed him, democracy was not the greatest contribution of Greece. Like Zack said, it was big and all, but the philosophic ideas that Greece produced were outstanding. As my boy J. Caps said, philosophy paved the way for the other events that unfolded in modern times. Philosophy was a big deal, bigger than the contribution of democracy and here is why. Without the great philosophers of Greece, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc., we would not have the idea of a democracy. Aristotle, because he was such a great philosopher, had the idea of democracy and put it into action. But how did that thought of democracy come into his head? Easy, the teachers and philosophers before him taught him that he needed an open mind, for thats where the great ideas would come from. So in turn, democracy was a result of the Greek philosophic state of mind, and thats why it is the greatest contribution. Many of the philosophers were great people, and they were the ones that were truly remembered. Without the teachers and philosophers before him, he wouldn't have the thoughts of a new system of government. Just like on our common task where we were asked to evaluate Plato's(?not sure who it was) opinions of Aristotle and the Greek democratic government. These are truly the reasons why philosophy is the better contribution of Greece.
I agree with david about how he disagrees how Greece's significant contribution to the world would be Democracy. Without philosphy then we wouldn't be able to think of new ideas which would have leaded to the creation of Democracy. Philosphy allows us to expand and evolve our knowledge and share with others on what we think. Although, many people during that time did not appreciate the different thoughts from philosphy today people can see the great use for it because we use it for theories about the world and other such things. I think that was their biggest accomplishment and a little something that they had left behind for us.
Hey Mr. yip I accidentally posted the blog from yesterday in the exit ticket from 2 days ago, but I did do it on time. So I copied and pasted it into the correct spot.
Okay, so I am like the last one to blog and I read though all of the ideas. And you guys really do not want to think do you. The only two points any of you came up with was philosophy and the democracy. Both of which were examples that Mr. Yip used. To be honest I’m a little disappointed.
In my opinion democracy was the biggest contribution Grease made in today’s world. I agree with Kyle the most because he seems not to waver in his idea that democracy was Grease’s greatest achievement. Democracy is the type of government that allows the citizens of the nation in question to have a say in government. I love my nation and believe that we have the greatest system of government in the world (democracy) despite our current economic situation. Yet, if democracy was never discovered we would not be where we are today.
I agee with Sarah in That their biggest contribution to society was philosophy. Even as far as saying that without it, the modern world would not be what it is today. Socratism was the precursor for christianity, one of the largest religions the world has ever seen, and, for THAT matter, the Untied States would never have been formed WITHOUT Socratism and greek thinking, as the belief of religious and philosophical are a by prodyuct of Greek culture. I politefully disagree with everyone who said that democracy was the leading contribution, by saying that democracy was nothing but a product of Greek philosophy, and can be included in the concept of said philosophy.
Hey Tom, you said you disagreed with the only two points used, so I thought maybe you'll give us a new point which was the greatest contribution that was made. Yet, you disappointed me and said that it was democracy, which frankly, I don't mind even though I disagreed with, but more of the fact that you didn't use a different idea. What was the point in puting that on it then?
^iAmazing is David Drocic BTW.
One could argue, Mr. iAmazing, that the greatest contribution wade, was the fact that ALL of these contributions were made. With Art,democracy, philosophy, and architecture so blended and connected, it is impossible to choose one. Greeks believed strongly in moderation, so what if we just say that they all were equal contributions to society, and we, as a country, could not have existed without the greeks.
