Rome holds many reasons for being great. They had dazzling military tactics as they conquered areas which settled them with Roman and Latin citizens. Romans were good diplomats and gave conquered people a chance at citizenship. Rome’s idea that all communities must give a supply of soldiers kept their armies stocked and ready to fight at all times. This made them very strong and powerful. Finally their transportation was excellent, specifically roads. Instrumental to the success of Rome was its innovative system of roads. Built in an extremely efficient way, constructed in straight lines, these roads were perfect for transporting goods, travel by the military and moving communications quickly. 372 main roads located on 53,000 miles of ground, the construction was gravel-based and flagstone. Building the roads this way was smart and allowed drainage so that unexpected weather would not stop Rome from moving forward. Formed so that centrally located Rome was connected to the water and land across its entire peninsula, the road system was unique as well as an important part of Rome’s success. It allowed Rome access to spread out and take over the entire peninsula, gaining strength and power.

Many aspects of Roman life were taken from Greese such as religion, art, philosophy, and so on: yet Rome obviously perfected their civilization far beyond the Greeks due to the fact that they lasted hundreds of years longer than they did. Rome was a militaristic empire, and put forth most of its considerable ingenuity to improve military tactics and weaponry to turn the tide of battle in their favor. Rome’s culture was also great (fallowing the Greek example) the arts were very influential and their religion speed far over the providences of Rome. The militaristic center point is I believe the greatest aspect that makes Rome great because it allowed them to hold their empire and expand their lands.

Rome has many factors proving the greatness of its own society. Rome possessed a powerful miliary strategy and a way of expanding their civilization. They were also known as great diplomats. They extended their lands through granting citizens a chance of citizenship. I believe Katelyn when she says when all communities have to provide men for Roman armies were a great way of stocking the soldiers up after the battles and are ready to fight like they are in the American Revolution through malitas. This idea of providing soldiers was keeping them in success as is granting citizenships. Citizenship granting is the most powerful reason why Rome is so great. This aids in the expansion of its land and brings much more allies to depend on during battle. Citizenship connects to all success.

i think that rome had many factors to its greatness including a well trained millitary and assimilation tactics which discouraged revolt. in my mind, this was there most effective tecnique, because conquered people would a.) want to be a part of this great culture and b.) wouldnt revolt out of fear of romes wrath. another subject with ties to the first is the roads. these were effective ways of moving their armies to where they had to go. this gave them an element of suprise and would allow them to take advantage of an unprepared force

Some factors that made Rome great was their military tatics, courage, diplomats and other such things. Rome was very militaristic and on one of the sidebars it talks about how one defender was able to save Rome from the invaders when everyone else was cowering. I think that the one factor that was was most important to Rome's success is how the gave people to chance to get a citizenship through different means. This would be able to give someones life a meaning or something to do. Also, when your giving out citizenship its means that you are being united and being united is more effiecent for Rome and allows Rome to grow bigger.

rome was a great city state. their greatest aspects were the combination of good roads and a powerful military. their military was always well stocked due to contributions from communities. their tactics were superior to those of the other italian peoples. their roads were very efficient and straight. they allowed for quick and easy transportation of goods and military personnel. this allowed for military dominance and allowed them to conquer the italian penninsula.

Rome had many factors that played into it's greatness. On was it's government, the way they set up the government in what they called a republic helped rome survive for so long. Rome also had very important geography that was key in their lasting power. I believe the most powerful factor was their government. This is because Rome was controled by the people and not just not one person such as in a monarchy. It also fit the way that Rome's society was so that it could benefit from it the most. This allowed Rome to conquer and control ther italian empire and maintain it. They told the conquered states that they could be citizens if they did not rebel. If there were any rebellions, the romans would extingeush them quickly and efficiently with no mercy. The Romans were also very good at diplomacy which was a key factor in their surivablity.

Rome lasted for about 2200 years, which is impressive. Rome was great for sucessfully lasting such a long time. Aspects that contributed to Romes' greatness include, that it was centrally located on a peninsula. Therefore, there was easy acsess to water and the advantages of trade and transportation that come with it. Rome was able to spread out among the peninsula and could also spread its beliefs as it expanded. As Ed said, granting citizenship expanded Rome's oppertunities. I agree with what Katelyn said about the military being armed and ready at all times. This to me is one of the most important contributions to Romes' greatness.

I believe the most i important factor for the Roman Empire was its conquest of the Mediterranean and having Italy. I think this because when it has places in Egypt to grow crops and it has a port in Italy it makes it easier to send things to one place to another. Also with the empire along the Mediterranean then it is easier to communicate and make tactics because information could be sent by boat. This would make a more unified empire and that is a huge factor to play when running such a large empire.

i would like to start the blog by quoting someone who we are very familiar with. the Great justin. "One's total success is defined by one's past decisions." stated February 2nd 2009. Rome's success were due to 3 advantages. the first is that they were in a location that allowed them to easily conquer and defend the land they conquered. the mountains provided the protection and the sea provided trade and expansion. secondly the roads allowed romans to travel around easily which united Greece. last was the government. they had a government that allowed freedom enough that the romans would unite and wipe out all rebellions. once they got the rebels under control they expanded. they didn't conquer but they "allied" them self with neighboring countries. they told them that they must supply Rome with men but they could become roman citizens. the allies felt that a Roman citizenship was the best thing in the world so they agreed making Rome even more powerful. now that they are powerful they gave other countries the same opportunity. this gave them the chance to be citizens or not. the other countries then did what they could to move up in Rome's social standing hoping to attain citizenship which only made Rome stronger. then more countries wanted to join and the cycle just repeated its self again and again. what the other countries didn't do was refuse the offer and take Rome down while they had the chance.

i agree with what you said Katelyn. they had a very good transportation system. that is also what allowed them to gain as much power as they did. Ed had the same thought process as me when thinking that there military was the key to there success. last i agree with kyle when he said, Rome had many factors that played into it's greatness. On was it's government, the way they set up the government in what they called a republic helped rome survive for so long. Rome had many factors contributing to its greatness including their government, their military, as well as many of the things they carried over from greece including artistic views, religion and philosophy. However, I agree with Kyle in saying governmet was the most powerful factor. Their government was ruled by the people and also helped to conquer city states like Kyle said. In my opinion their government did more then that. I believe that civilization builds off government, and that governemt sets a foundation. Therefore I think government was the most powerful, it allowed them to conquer peninsulas and city states. Military is important but without a strong government I believe a strong military couldnt completely develop.

Rome was obviously doing something right or the wouldn't have lasted over 2000 years. For one thing, military was a great asset of Rome. They were powerful enough to keep out any enemy that came their way. However, they did have a little help from their location. Rome was surrounded by mountains and a river to help protect them from invasions of enemies. Finally, Rome had a good government. They had different positions with different levels of power. One of the upsides to their governmernt was that the positions changed terms every year. This was good because new ideas were able to be introduced every year.

There are many factors that contributed to Rome's greatness. Rome's geography, their military, and their agriculture, are three of the main factors contributing to the greatness and success of Rome. I would have to say the factor that helped Rome to be great the most was Rome's geography. As it expanded from the Italian peninsula it was in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, in the middle of trades, growth, and exploration. The mountains of Rome made Rome harder to attack and more defensible. Without its key placement I doubt Rome would have been as great.

Rome was great for many reasons and not only was a powerful civiliztion, but also managed to live for over 2000 years and become the bridge between ancient history and modern history. One of the reasons why Greece was so great was because of all of its geographical advantages. Another reason is the army was extremely powerful and also allowed everyone to become Roman citizens. The final reason why Rome was so great, was that the two social classes, Patricians and Plebeians, were able to settle their differences and create equal rights for the Plebeians. I disagree with Katelyn's opinion on the roads being most important. I believe that the most important reason why Rome was so great was its geographical surroundings. The mountains offered protection from invaders and pirates, but did not isolate itself like Greece did. The Italian peninsula offered trade and navigation all across the Mediteranian for Rome was at a central point withing the sea. The reason why i think that Rome's gepography is why Rome was so great, is because if Rome was located in another place where lands were less furtile and the natural turrain didnt offer protection, Rome would have fallen. Without the mountains and rivers stopping pirates and many other invaders trying to attack Rome, invaders would have easily come into Rome and would not have lasted for over 2000 years.

As many people have said, Rome's military was one of the best reasons for being great. This is because they were always prepared with inteligent war tactics as Katelyn said. Although, I believe that government was their greatest reason for being great. They did not allow themselves to be ruled by one man for a long time. This made no man too powerful which gave many people freedom. In government, the man senior man controlled the government while the junior man controlled the army. After they would switch it would bring new ideas as well as when they would elect more men to serve their terms as Dylan said. Even though many people would be in office, over time they would change making Rome truly a place for the people.

In my opinion, I believe that Rome was as great as it is because of Greece's heavy influence on them. Rome thrived for over 2 millenniums. Their government, geographical features, transportation, communication, trade and military allowed Rome to become as great as it is now known. Their milital tactics and advantages helped Rome achieve greatness. The Roman empire and civilization served as a bridge to the era of exploration.

Many factors that made Rome great included their culture, military, and geographical location. Not to mention they even allowed people to become Roman citizens. Greek and Etruscan cultures influenced Rome. Like the toga Rome began to utilized from the Etruscans. Their geographical area was an abundance of mountanious region which resulted in the protection of Rome. One could even say that nature wanted to protect Rome by gifting them with the Alps. mountain. However, Rome was still vulnerable because the Alps wasn't "impossible" to cross. Rather it was feasible but a difficult way was paved ahead. The roads was something that really surprised me. It was very interesting how they managed to build the roads as best as possible with the correct angles for many things. Those many things as said in the book was an advantage of transportation in goods and military. In my opinion, what made Roman great was their geographical positioning and their roads. The rest such as the military is something thats very common with every city. Their military tactics and such wasn't enough to convince me as their best factor, even though it did contribute. The reason is because I ask myself, "How many cities have built roads with success that would provide with many opportunities? As well as how many cities had their geographical area offer at least some form of protection?" Sure, some did but not many. As well as when we think of roads we tend to not draw out the significant facts that scream out. Only that they provide ground for cars. But more than 2,000 years ago, in a city it provided with more than usually drawn opportunities. This attribute of the roads that was introduced in Rome clearly made Rome what it was all about.

I personally think that the main factor to Rome’s success was their determination, persistence and intelligence. Rome was smart enough to fix the problems that brought annihilation to other countries. They made a stable government, and military. In the government the consuls would trade positions after 6 months. This evolutionary change made the people not bored of the ruler, and as matt said they were open to new ideas. With Rome’s determination and persistence their military conquered all of Italy and more. When their military fled and let them down, they would gather a new one instead of quitting. That’s why Rome had lased for so many years. Also without all of these factors, no one would have created the stable government that controlled the fierce army.

There were alot of factors that were said to have made Rome great. What I think was the most important was their geographical postion. As the book said it was easy to defend, kept them safe but they still had good farming unlike Greece. But having natural protection I believe allowed them to have time to grow and develop themselves without any issues. Not to say that there were none because they had many people come try to conquer them in their early years. Which I believe is another reason for Rome's success. All the battle and protecting themselves gave them military experience and they were able to learn tactics a strategies giving them superiority in battle, which in the long run would help them conquer what became their empire.

Rome was a great city and held a giant empire. However, I think that only one reason allowed them to get this far and that was their superior military. Their idea for the Roman confederation reminded me of the Delian League because they took other city states soldiers to use for thier own while they ran around and did nothing. Other things influenced Rome to be so great, and as Katelyn said, their roads were excellent and they definitly influenced Rome's travel around Italy. Also, the way that their government was set up was highly sopishticated for their time and definitly helped Rome last for so many years as Kyle had said.

P.S. Mr. Yip, you said Katelyn did some extra research but on page 129 on the picture caption it holds all of the information that she stated. Just saying.

I believe the three main things that made Rome great would be first, their geographical elements. These would first include their location mainly involving the Mediterranean Sea. By being in that circle of trade, that the Mediterranean gave to all the city states around it, it was a great source for trade and other resources. The second would be mountains which gave them great protection to unify and develop writing and culture. The second characteristic would be their government which was heavily in favor of democracy. This was shown by their scornful distaste for kings/ monarchies. This allowed persistent control of their people which allows order and balance to develop. The third thing would be their impressive army. In both strength and numbers their army was dominant which kept them ready and on guard for sudden or planned attacks. The most important characteristic of Rome throughout the many years their republic and power remained persistent would be their persistence themselves. There ability to look for new ideas, search for new answers, and develop new ways of culture is what makes them respectable for being named the bridge to the modern world.

Rome's technology is what made it so great, because it is the same concept as running over cavalry with tanks. if your weapons are bigger, you win. America proved it in world war 2, an d it just repeats over history. The romans developed a large collection of free thinkers and inventors during their prime, and these people helped them stay on the cutting edge of science and warfare, from the detachable spearhead, to better shipbuilding, the romans dominated the technological battlefield, and thus, on the real battlefield, dominated their opposition.
