Athens

Best- Their Government was a democracy, which was a little too chaotic for that time but was ruled by the people other than by one or a few people. They concentrated on forming alliances and expanding wisdom.

Worst-Their expansive growth led to their dimise, because the greeks feared Athens would get to powerful.

Sparta

Best-Their extremely powerful military allowed them to invade and overcome citystates by force.

Worst-Spartans had a very bad education, and because of the Oligarchy Sparta formed, they were overthrown by all of Greece.

Athens
Best- The good things about Athens is how they governed; as a democracy. Also their education was good seeing as the various materials they teached.
Worst- The women there had nearly no rights whatsoever

Sparta
Best- Obviously their military conquered over most at the time.
Worst- Their education didn't exceed as much. Not as many subjects were taught or available.

Athens
Best: The best part about Athens was that the government form they used was a democracy, so the people had more of a say in the government, which was good for this time period.

Worst: The worst part about Athens was that the women did not have any say in the politics, and they were not the physical/active type. The girls also got less education than the boys.

Sparta
Best: The best part about Sparta was that they had an extremely strong military, and they also had an oligarchy, which was more stable than a monarchy and less chaotic as Matt said than a democracy.

Worst: The worst part about Sparta would be that the education(the kind that we have)was very bad, unless you say their military education which was hardcore training from young ages.

Athens
Best- they had democracy, so the people got what they wanted & were happy. Had a powerful navy (one that beat the Persians at salamis) which allowed them to control trade in the Aegean. Controlled the Delian league and had an empire. Was a center for the arts and thinkers. Left a long standing legacy.
Worst- government was very chaotic with little stability. Women couldn’t vote. they Were beaten by Spartans in Peloponnesian wars. Had an army that was weaker than Sparta’s

Sparta
Best- had a powerful army (the strongest of its time) with great leadership. a conservative government which provided stability. An economy strong enough to make its army the strongest in Greece. Women had the most freedom out of anywhere in Greece. Won Peloponnesian wars, they gave us 300
Worst- no intellectual activity (would make people stray from the military life). Economy relied on slaves, and slaves outnumbered citizens left almost no legacy.

Athens

Best: Their government was run through a democracy by the people. Athens was the intellectual center of Greece. The peoples believed in the balance between mind and body. Cultural aspects such as art, architecture, drama and literature, philosophy, science, and medicine were stressed.

Worst: Athenian women and girls were rarely seen outside the home with no participation in politics. Wives were considered property of their husbands, and girls had less of an education then boys.

Sparta

Best: Sparta's powerful military with its feared members conquered most of the time. Girls and women were treated more as equals to men. Children were taught to respect elderly, women, and warriors...which is something society today lacks.

Worst: Children were taught to get along with almost nothing. Boys were taken from parents at age seven and trained in the art of warfare. Sparta had poor education systems.

the best thing about Athens is is that it is a democracy. this gives the people more freedom. the worst trait is that its land based military wasn't strong making them vulnerable to land attacks. the best thing about Sparta is that they had a very powerful army which allowed them to conquer a lot of land. the worst trait is that they threw any babies that had any sign of weakness or illness they were thrown off a cliff. this reduced the amount of citizens.

Athens

Best- Thy had a much more sophisticated way to govern themselves than the Spartans and allowed their people to make the decisions and pass laws. This prevented revolts or rebellions as it was the people who governed themselves rather than a single person or persons.

Least best- this way of governing could get out of hand due to the many disagreements that must have occurred between the people. The other flaw in Athens government was the discrimination they had towards women and their ways of thinking. Women were not allowed to get the same types of education as the males, stayed in their place of residence, and did household work that was becoming of a woman.

Sparta- The coolest thing about Sparta is their killer military, these guys just loved to fight and kill stuff. Another advantage would be their government which relied on a small group of nobles ruling a land, this is a little better than a complete monarchy because of the controversial opinions of these men.

Bad parts- the whole centering your entire existence on killing people for your nation and to improve your status within your nation is a bit psychotic. I mean these guys were trained to kill from age seven and if there was a week baby born, it was tossed of a cliff or something. Now to me that’s kind of awesome but it is not how to maintain a stable society.

Athens

Best- one of the best things and certainly one of the more rare things of that time was that their government was a democracy. Even though this shows complex culture and society it may have not been the most conservative choice. Because the democracy was rules by the people it made things a little wild.

Worst- the worst thing about Athens was there tremendous sexist society women had no rights no capabilities physically or mentally. They no education what so ever, and were basically thought of as taking up space if not for the ability to reproduce and cook.

Sparta

Best- The best thing about Sparta was their power over other societies. It did not take much effort to obtain more land. They had a voraciously strong military that was superior at taking land, or other goods, by force.

Worst- the worst characteristic for Sparta would be there great lack of education. They had no knowledge outside of incredible tactic and strategic war I.Q.’s.

Athens

Best: They had a democracy so their government was not ruled by one certain person. It was ruled by the opinions of the people. They contained many alliances.
Worst: This means that the Greeks had to keep a cautious eye so Athens doesn't become too powerful. Also, Democracy could have the good and/or bad effect. The democarcy could be out of hand to control or it could be just thing to get out off being controlled by a couple of noble or being ruled by one person.

Sparta

Best: They have a great army.
Worst: I agree with Matt O. when the Spartans don't have a good education. The punishments given also demonstrate cruel brutallity at its worst with the throwing of a baby off a cliff if the boy demonstrated the utter sign of weakness. The Spartans contained a totalitarian kind of government so they pretty much had no freedom what so ever. The government was the oligarchy.

Athens-

best- i think the best part about Athens was their freedom. Their government was a democracy which gave them the freedom to choose their leaders and lifestyles. They were allowed to have fun.

worst- their army was not strong, so they could be attacked at any time. that is a very big issue for athens, protection.

freedom comes with costs.

SPARTA!

best- they had an amazing army, no one had to live with the fear of being attacked because they knew they were safe. Also, they were very proud of their polis, freedom or not.

worst- they didn't have as much freedom as athens did. Also their education wasn't very good either. and if you were a boy in sparta you were taken away for the military at age 7 i think. which isn't fun. but they protected everyone.

Athens
Best: The early idea of a democracy as their form of government which gave power to the people instead of just one person or a small grop. They also had a strong navy that helped them rule the sea.

Worst: Athens has a little bit of an over population with approximately 140,000 people. Women had no real rights except with religous affairs.

Sparta
Best: Had the best and the most feared army in all of Greece. Also Sparta had more independent women.

Worst: The Spartan people did not get much education other than military knowledge. The Spartans were also not open to new ideas. Also the Spartans the government is in the hands of a few people which isn't always a good thing.

Athens: Best: Had very large amouns of men at their disposal as well as a very powerful navy

Worst: the lack of unity and overall overexpansion led to traitorous behavior by the greek city states

Sparta: Best: Had very well trained troops that were in troduced to weapons at a young age. made sparta powerful militarily.

Worst: had very large groups of uneducated men due to the withdrawl of children from schools to train in weapons

athens:
best: their government is a direct democracy allowing the people to have more of a say compared to spartas where only a few people ruled.

worst: in athens the woman didn't much say at all. they weren't involved in sports or politics. they also didn't have alot of formal eduaction.

sparta:
best: the best thing about sparta is that they had a very strong military.

worst: the worst about sparta is that they did not have a lot of eduaction nearly an subjects were available to be learned.

Athens

Best- Their form of government was a democracy, the male citizens were very involved with the dicisions, and they had a very advanced school system for their time, they were very involved with trade and communication with many different cultures.

Worst- Women had no role in the government aside from religous festivals, and were taught that they were the property of their husbands. Women were rareley seen outside the homes

Sparta

Best- A very powerful military that was not the largest army but the strongest. They could take what they wanted on land by force . Women were treated with respect as equals to men on most issues, which was very good for that time.

Worst- Their boys were taken from age 7 to begin training as a soldier and recived little and poor education. And their government was an oligarchy, they were only ruled by a few people.

Athens
Best: Government such as a democracy led to a strong method of expressing ideas and make decisions. Athens decisions could be made by the people other than forced by a few people like Matt stated.
Worst: Women were not allowed any participation in politics. They were basically the men’s slaves. Girls received less learning opportunities than the boys and were mainly kept at home. The main duty for the women involved spinning and weaving or other forms of art.

Sparta
Best: Sparta’s army was very strong which provided an opportunity of victory. Girls were treated more as equals.
Worst: At age seven, boys were taken from their parents to train in warfare. Education lacked very much for Sparta. It was based mostly on military tactics.

Athens: The best thing about Athens was their government was a democracy whcih is what many of our class thinks as well. it is because their people ruled great with a lot of say in their state/city.
The worst thing though was that thw women were not treated as fairly as other greek countries. Their woman we more of a thing the men owned then a person.

Sparta: The best thing about Sparta was their military. Every spartan man had too be a soldier. Those too weak to soldiers were too weak too be spartans. The rigerous training they gave their men made army the strongest with many battle formations that were successful in wars.
One of the worst thing for sparta was since they made everyone of their men a soldier, and some of their babies that were born was deemed not worthy to carry a spartan shield, this made their army smaller than many other countries. Plus they only educated their soldiers enough to read, and remember battle formations etc.

Athens

Best- Their best asset was their government which was a democracy. I, along with most other Americans, think it is the best form of government.

Worst- I think the worst part about Athens was that the women didn't have the same rights as men and weren't treated fairly.

Sparta

Best- The best thing Sparta possesed was their military. They had the strongest military and were feared by everyone else.

Worst- The worst thing about the Spartans was that they didn't have a very good education.

Athens

Best- goverment was democraxy and they formed alliances and expanded wisdom and arts.
Worst-women had no rights and Athens were getting too much pride would be their downfall.

Sparta

Best-they had a strong military force.
Worst-Spartans had an okay education but not as good as Athens, and because of Oligarchy they were overthrown by all of Greece.

Sparta
Good: I believe Sparta is better (not because im on the Spartan side in the Debate) because it was a more organized government and a democracy is too messy. The Spartans have great pride in themselves. They had a strong army.

Bad: The rest of Greece did not support Spartas oligarchy. Their education wasn't too great.

Athens:
Good: the fact that the people could vote and that their government was in control by them was a good thing for them

Bad: The people were in control of the government, but that did not mean everybody did. women could not vote in politics. They did not have too many rights. Spartan women were more respected.

Athens
best- the best part of Athens was probably their peaceful society. their attitude about war helped them focus on more important things and they got a lot more done.
worst- in the end their growth and expansion lead to their downfall

Sparta
best-their militaristic style gave them power over their people and other regions
worst- their style of organized chaos with teaching kids to steal and focusing manly on war eventually back fired and led to their demise

Worst-The women were considered 2nd class citizens.

Sparta-

Best-The Militaristic force of Sparta was a dominant force in ancient Greece.
