During-
-Athens and Sparta first citys built.
-They had a constitution system.
-They had large armies.
-They were big on writing with a poetic style.
-Homer was a big writer in the time.
-They had polises.
After-
-I learned that the Ancient Greeks were acctaully fairly civilized people and they had their own government system. They even had polises which they used for central locations for the government uses. The Greeks were also very big on writing, especially poems or EPIC stories.
During: My ideas were kind of like the ideas the offer had. The author did not even talk about it the war with Persia very much. The author did talk about the story of Odyssey and the author Homer which is what we're talking about in English.
After: I learned that the Greeces had a very complex culture and society. I also learned there we're more than just wars to the Greek history which is what basically we have been learning. Also the Greeces ahd a very advanced form of government because they use a democratic form of government.
During-
Mountains and the sea were significant in Greece. They were so isolated that some were obligated to create and follow their own customs.
After-
It was interesting how the book mentioned about Homer and his two epic poems; The Iliad, and The Odyssey. Since reading these books it's going to help me comprehend more about Ancient Greek in this textbook.
During- In Greece there were many small communities separated by mountains or rivers. They were so distant from on another they began to gain individual customs and fought among themselves to gain an advantage. The first Greek state to emerge was the state of Mycenae. Manny great cities in Mycenae fell to different causes and thus the great state came to an end and they fell into a period known as the Dark Age. The Dark Age consisted of the loss of good farming causing the Greeks to leave there home and migrate across the sea. During the Dark Age central points in the shape of small villages with a noticeable power in politics emerged this was called a city state or a Polis.
After- the important points to remember in my opinion is that Greece was a very unstable nation and had its ups and downs like everything else. Also the forming of city States- helped them get out of this great depressing dark age to which they had fallen into.
During-
When I posted in the blog before this one I was right about some of their civilizaton but I missed out on a lot. The geography of Greece was very important to the culture of the many towns and cities of Greece. They had their own government. There was also a lot of water so trade by sea was very important.
After- I learned that the geography of Greece was very important to the varied cultures of Greece. The Greeks were very religous in the belief of the gods. This will probably be easier to study because of the knowledge I have obtained from Eanglish class.
During: Aegean civilization began with the Minoans (named after king minos). They traded with Egypt and had influence over the rest of Greece. Then, they got blown up by a volcano and what was left of them were conquered by the Mycenae’s. the Mycenae’s were a warlike, indo-European people. They formed an alliance of states and had a trade network all over the Mediterranean. They may have invaded troy (which would have been a Hittite state). In 1119bc, Mycenae itself was burned and greek speaking people from the north (called dorians, I think) took over, and the greek dark ages began. Homer wrote the Iliad&odyssey in this time. It was also considered actual history.
After: I mostly agree with the authors view on Mycenae. I was unaware that they didn’t speak greek, but I knew troy may have been Hittite and the Mycenae’s may have sacked troy. I wonder if Ithaca ws real?
During:
They had a constitution system. Homer the writer of Greek Mythology was a very famous author in their time. Also because of the influence of Homers writing style they were known for the poetic style writing. Mountains and seas were very significant in Greece. Also the geography OF Greece played a big part in many of the towns and cities of Greece.
After:
The Greeks were very involved in writing poetic EPIC novels and stories. They also showed signs of one of the more civilized cultures to come along so far. With not being said I will mention that they were not one of the more stable cultures, but not many were at that time.
During
I was right about the citystates, athens, sparta, thebes and there were a few more i had never heard of. They were also isolated for a while from the rest of the world which gave them their own unique culture.
After
Geoegraphy was very important in ancient greece and their development. Early Greece occupied a small mountainous peninsula. The mountains isolated Greeks from each other allowing small communities to develop on their own. Greece's long seacoast also influenced their society. They inhabited surrounding islands and travelling the meditateranian sea allowed them to make contact with the outside world.
During; I learned alot during the reading but also knew some of the sutff. Such as they had a different alphabet, that was used after Greece revived its self. The alphabet was called the phoenician alphabet. geography was also important they had mountain rangers, and a long sea cost. geography sepreated the people at times and could even cause fights becuase of the seperated paths people took. I also learned Athens and Sparta were the first city's built. Greece also had elements of a civilizations. Some parts where monarchias, showing they had a form of government. Trading was also done as well as farming to make specialized labor. And for the writing system they had an aplhebet.
after; i thought the main points were
-had many elements of a civilization
- important geography
-had epic writers [Homer]
- religious
-athens and sparta; first cities built
During-
Greece was seperated due to the mountainous barriers, and grew so apart that wars wars broke out. My previous thoughts followed the books general outline, however i didnt know about thefirst civilization in the Aegean region was on the isle of Crete. Also, i didnt know Mycenaen civiliztion, which waas the first greek state. After that fell, Homer and his masterpieces emerged, and the importance of his Epics were clearly shown.
After
Greece wasnt very stable, and civliztions would fall to the next one and led to the dark ages. The greeks decreased majorly in population, but soon after, Homer and his masterful Epic poems such as the Iliad, and The oddysey. Those epics showed the greeks the guide lines for arete, which was striving for ethe exelence befitting a hero.
Sarah Kelley-Period 4
During- During the reading
I realized that Greece was a relatively small area, that was a mountainous peninsula. The mountains seperated Greece into diverse communities. Athens and Sparta fought for domination of the Greek world. After the collapse of Mycenaeans, Greece entered a difficult time period. Toward the end of the Dark Age came the works of Homer.
After- After the reading I learned that Greece used its geography to its advantage. The political system in Athens was crucial to its people. The Mycenaean civilization consisted of many powerful monarchies. The poetry of Homer demonstrated the most famous of all their [Mycenaean Civilization] supposed military adventures. The Greeks adopted an alphabet when times were tough to enable a system of communication.
meg
during
-advanced civilization
-first cities
-(Athens and Sparta)
-influenced by the Greek geography
-city states
After
I learned that tho the Greek cities were very civilized, they were not very stable. They fell apart in a domino affect. They had a strong culture and our modern day world is very much so influenced by Greece.
During-While reading the section I was definetly right about the Greeks being big on mythology and writing.
After-The most important ideas to remember are:
-They were Seafaring people
-They were involved with writing (Iliad, Odyussey)
-Homer was a big writer for the Greeks-They had a democratic government system
Edward Cummins
During: I definately had a different ideal of society than the author did of this society. My thought that it was a great society with a lot of accomplishments. As much as their were a lot of accomplishments, I was amazed of how many downfalls they had as well.
After: They had a democracy.
Arrival:1900 B.C.E.
Geography played an important role in Greek History.
Greece had independent communities surrounded by Mountainous areas.
fight one another to gain an advantage.
Sea influenced Greek Society.
Islands west, south, and particularly east of the mainland were inhabited by the Greeks.
No accident that they sailed out into the Aegan and Meditarranean seas to make contact with the outside world that would spread Greek civilization through Medittaranean.
Minoan Crete
earliest civilization in Aegan region, a large island of Crete, southeast of Greek mainland.
Civilization discovered at the turn of the 20th century by Arthur Evans, who named it Minoan after Minos, a legendary King of Crete.
influences of Greek but not Greek.
not same language and religion.
know from archaeological remains that they were a sea faring group.
made contact with the more advanced civilization Egypt.
Sudden Catostrophe with maybe could have been caused by a Tsunami triggered by by a powerful volcanic eruption on the island of Thera.
First Greek State: Mycenea
Term Mycanean is derived from, a remarkable fortified site excavated by the Amateur German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann starting in 1870.
Were part of Indo European family of peoples who spread from their original locayion into Southern and Western Europe, India and Persia.
Reached high point between 1400 and 1200 B.C.E.
above all warrior people.
pride themselves of heroic deeds during battle.
most famous of miltary adventures came from Homer's Epic.
Mycanae itself burned around 1190 B.C.E.
Greek world moving into considerable insecurity
Greeks in Dark Age
Greeks were declining in population and food production. During the Dark age, large numbers of Greeks migrated across Aegean sea to various islands especially to the Southwestern shore of Asia Minor, came to be called Ionia.
The Aeolian Greeks of Northern and Central Greece colonized Lesbos and adjacent territoy of the mainland.
Dorians established in South Western Greece, especially Peloponneseus as well as on some of the South Aegean islands including Crete.
As economy came back... - At some point in the Eighth Century B.C.E. Greeks adopted Phoenecian alphabet to give a new system of writing.
iron replaced bronze in constitution of weapons.
Homer and Homeric Greece
According to the Homeric view, Greece was a society based upon Agriculture.
Homer's Enduring Importance
gave Greeks ideal past.

During: Geography played a significant role in developing Greek’s history due to the mountain ranges which isolated them from one another in addition to the seas which created access to the outside world. Homer’s famous poems of early Greece including the Odyssey and the Iliad are an important description of the Dark Age in Greece. Previously in my English class, we studied the epic poem Iliad which has provided me with prior knowledge of Greek’s established writing system. I agree that Homer shaped thoughts of heroes, honor and nobility which became the value system of the Aristocrats.
After: The Greek word polis later evolved to the word we know as politics, although the Greek polis had much more of a focus than only politics. Its cities or villages were the center of activity for religion and social purposes, too. The development of a new type of military is seen as the Greeks used units in rectangular formation with men who now had armor protection and shields.
I learned that the anchient Greek lived in a small area to start off. It was a mountainous pennisula. The mountains acted as natural borders between the areas of greece. This separation caused rivalry between the regions of greece. They faught over anything to gain an advantage. On the island of Crete the inhabitants known as the manoans exceted in bronze work. Egyptian mertiandise was found on Crete which suggests that they traded with Egypt. In the storage room they found grain, wine, and oil which was paid as taxes. Crete was destroyed when a tsunami caused by a volcanic eruption on a nearby island called thera. Either that or they were overrun by mycenaeans. Mycenaeans built palaces that were surroundedby stone walls. They were worrior people. They were led by Agamemnon in the trojian war. When greece fell into a dark age many citizens left the mainland traveling to southern Islands. One of the greatest poets of that time was homer. He wrote the illiad which was about the trojian war. He also wrote the odyssey. An epic about the return trip of king Odysseus.
During-they were seperated from the outside by mountains and rivers. they devoloped different cultures and customs because of this. they had a constitution system and wrote in a poetic style.
After-I learned that the terrian was important to the devolopment to greece's custom. They were pretty big on the poetic writing and the illiad and Odyssey written by Homer.
During-the first cities of Greece were Athens and Sparta. they were big on writing and Homer's poetry is still read today. their armies were powerful and could conquer other nations. they had a system of policies/laws.
After- the ancient greeks were a civilized people but were also very warlike. they were democratic and had a system of government function that helped them funtion. Homer's epics were important and were memorized by heart.
During - the author mainly focused on the Crete and Mycenaean civilizations. The first cities were Athens and Sparta. Writing had a big influence on their culture. The similarities between my guesses and the author’s facts are that Greece was big on warfare and mythology.
After - Important things to know would be that Greece had good geography; they had many natural barriers and seas which are good for protection and trading but bad in the sense that their cities were divided.
The first civilization in the Aegean was Crete, excavated by Arthur Evans. They used bronze as a metal, which started in 2800 bce. The archeologist who found Crete named it Minoan Crete after the king of Crete, Minos .they were not Greek, but were influenced by it. The findings of a palace proved that they were very wealthy. They had sea traveling on their side and used it to its full potential by making contact with Egypt and the Greek mainland. In the palace they found many art forms that were influenced by mohenjo - daro in india. The commoners paid taxes in oil, wine, and grain. The empire collapsed in 1450 bce they believe it was a tsunami.
The first Greek state was Mycenae, excavated by Heinrich Schliemann.
Mycenae flourished in 1600 and 1100 bce. Part of the indo-Europe family. Mycenaean civilization reached its height in 1400-1200 bce. Had many powerful monarchies based in palaces. The palaces were built on hills and surrounded by big stone walls. Mycenaean’s were warrior people. Their pottery has been found all over the civilizations near the Mediterranean Sea. Believed that Mycenaean’s conquered Crete. All of their military adventured were "recorded" in the homer epics.
By the late thirteenth century Mycenaean civilization started to crumble. And they ended up entering a dark period they called the Dark Age. During this time there was a fall in the population and food production. Many of the inhabitants left Greece. But the economy began to recover and iron took the place of bronze and the Phoenician alphabet was created taking Greece out of the Dark Age.
Because of this new alphabet homer the awesome poet emerged, making the Iliad and odyssey, epic poems about the Trojan War and the journey of Odysseus. These poems soon had an influence on their culture by looking at these poems as a guideline to life.
I would just like to comment, WOW TO SARAH AND EDDIE, YOU REALLY EXPANDED THE WORK! NICEE!
during:
Ancient greeks had a good constitution system and large armies. Homer was a famous athour to the greeks. Poetry was their best writing style. Athens and Sparta were their first cities built.
After:
The greeks were very warlike but still civilized. They liked writing poems and epic novels and such. The geography was important as well, and polis evolved into the word polictic which is what we use today, as well as other influences from greece.
During
- They were a seafaring people
-had an alphabet
-Homer was a great greek poet
-City states had personalities, some were warlike, and some were peace loving
-extremely advanced civilization.
After
Because of The Mountains in greece, they had a hard time uniting under one banner, so they developed into theyre own mini societies, the city states. A citizen wouldnt say they were greek, they would say they were Myceneaen, or Minoan, or Spartan, a sort of hometown pride uncommon in other areas. Homer was very important to the greeks as well.
