By skimming through the passages, what I have determined as the greatest accomplishment of Islam. Is that it found itself a way to unite the many clans of people in the middle east. In this manner, there was created at least some unity in this region of the world. However while it did unite the arabs, it tore them apart. It forced them to argue and fight over certain parts of the religion that could have no certain answer. These groups, now known as the shiites and sunnis are now still continuing to fight over their beliefs in the middle east today.
islams main acheivment in my mind is the salvation and additions to greek thought. without this, much of the advances in thought that brought about the modern age. the philosophy allowed democracy and modern science among other things. another important change they brought was the true end of rome and the begining of the modern age.
the turks were the hand that guided the middle east into its current phase of discord.
I think one of the greatest accomplishments of the islamic people was their culture in terms of the literature and the arts. First, with their literature when al-Mas'udi wrote the meadows of gold which led to the first philosophy of history. Also they continuted a lot with the arts by giving us this idea geometric art as well as the beautiful palace Alhambra.
I agree with Bryan that Islams greatest achievement was the literature and art that they brought to the world. More so the literature. When I think about those times I don't really picture someone going to the market to buy a book to read, one of the reasons I found this interesting. Like the books The Arabian Nights, Rubaiyat of Omar, they affected the future as they were not so popular back then, but nineteenth century readers in Europe loved Omar Khayyan's work.

I also have to agree with Bryan when he said that culture was their complex culture. I believe that the Islamic civilization's biggest accomplishment was culture because it provided so much. They had many architecitual advancments when it came to form and shape. Art was also influenced by many things, which was also popular. Philosophies were also thought of which made this civilization even more successful. Their culture expanded their civilization because so much was contributed when it came to culture including arts, literature, poetry, and philosophies.
First off I don’t really understand what Kyle means by united Arabs and separating them. That sounds to me like just separation. I like what Bryan said they did bring to use the system of geometry, arts cannot be made like they are today without it. Not just Art but structures as well. And to Alex the Turks’ hand was less of a guide and more of a slave driver.

Islam accomplished uniting the polytheistic clans. before Muhammad, the Arabs were spread apart and had different beliefs. Islam made the divided clans unite in this empire that matched Rome land wise. this is a great accomplishment because they did it in an extremely short amount of time for the task they did. sadly they broke apart which just goes to show that no religion is perfect. ( i don't say that to offend anyone in case anyone took it offensively.
I can’t disagree on this one that Brian is a smart boy. There’s no doubt that their culture and their religious faith were the main influences in their rapid expansion. Most importantly was that book al-Mas’udi’s meadow of gold. Not only was this the first philosophy, but it brought unity and curiosity along with it. And as Cam will tell you curiosity is human nature and human nature is the most important thing in society. And my boy Tom came through again with his last few comments. I believe that without the Turks they would have been just fine anyway. They were more of a benefit. Islamic people I believe are great and were brilliant in creating the social standers in society, but I do want to know is, if they had such brilliant literal values why did they have to fight all the time. They were constantly under attack or at wars. I did have to do a lot with where they lived but still.
As john and brian said, literature and art was the greatest achievement the Islam had. Their literature is some of the only historical evidence we have of back then. People in the world were fascinated with the Islam literature in the nineteenth century and Europe loved reading it and learning about them because they thought they were extremely different. Also, its not like the Islam is taking all the credit for this, they were also influenced by others during that time and they were proud of it.
Everything that as Islam’s greatest accomplishment was already stated. So, my blog has really no significance. I believe that Islamic culture was Islam’s greatest accomplishment. They were very intelligent people. Islam loved to use geometric figures in their art and their literature lead to the first philosophy. Their religion was simple and easy to follow. That's why many people converted to Islam and stayed with the religion for the remainder of their lives.

I know that everybody is agreeing with Bryan but I have to add that I also agree with Bryan as well. As much as they did, they influenced many cultures with their art and literature. They constructed marvelous monuments and contributed to art that influenced some of the finest artistic capabilities of these times. The art also depicts the pastimes in their history.
I have to agree with Sarah on this one...everything has pretty much already been said. I think that their greatest accomplishment was in their complex culture. Along with al-Mas'udi's meadows of gold, which led to philosophy, the Quar'an also was an accomplishment and is viewed by many as the greatest piece of literature of all time. They also made great strides in the field of art and used floral, intricate designs almost always in their art. The fact that following Islam was fairly simple was also a benefit (as sarah said) because it's simplicity and knowing the latest word of the god.
Actually, I want to change my answer. I think that everyone is just agreeing with Bryan be ause they are too afraid to voice their own opinions. The greatest accomplishmet made by the islams is within itself. The fact that Islam went from some guy ranting in a village to the most popular relgion in the world is an accomplishment in itself!!!! Islam grew rapidly throughout the middle east, Asia, Africa, and Europe in such a little amount of time. Everyone is missing the point! This is their greatest accomplishment!!!!! Without Islam becoming the super power it is today, there might not would have been the complex culture that everyone is trying to convey. (p.s. Come on guys...besides from alex, Kyle, and Bryan, I haven't heard one original thought. Really pathetic that all of you have the same answer.)(p.s.s. I can understand some people agreeing, but everyone!!!!????)
Not including you justin. :)
I’m actually not going to agree with Bryan, even though I do think he has a very good point. I like both Kyle and Alex’s ideas. Islam definitely added to and enhanced previous thoughts, explorations, and ideals. This in turn, helped to unite the Middle East based on common ideas and similar beliefs. I also think that even though forcing someone into a belief doesn’t truly make them a believer it certainly helped Islam to become more main stream, and widely followed. This allowed for great successes, power and control.
I believe that their constructions of palaces which look like fortresses according to the book is an important accomplishment in Islamic civilization because the palace is a holy and political place that also combines that artistic element into it. Also, fortresses/palaces are cool, I mean really would you choose a straw hut or a big butt palace.
Heyy, I remember reading this pages while doing ALOT of questions. :( Well, back to the blog. Well not entirely because everyone was probably to lazy to go back and skim the pages to see what Islam's greatest contribution was so they just copied what everyone before them said. Now, back to the blog. I'm going to go off on a limb and say that the Islamic civilization's most important accomplishment would be in their whole concept of not being forced to accept the religion. I'm referring back to page 192 when the book says that in the Qur'an that "there shall be no compulsion in religion" which means that the people cannot be forced to practice this religion. I think that this was the Islamic civilization's most important accomplishment.
I think that their most important accomplishment is what Bryan said: their art. They used geometric figures in their art which we use commonly in today's world but know are called tesselations. They are still used in math and art often today.
ok well everyone i just copying bryan in saying that art is the most important contribution of the muslims. sure u can believe it but the most important thing was that it created an empire under one god that had a single religous and secular leader. this religion would proceed to become a driving force for millions to expand their empire. as it evolved it became one of the most common religions in the world. so u can say what you want about art and math but arabs today would not exist as they are today if not for muhammad and his caliphs.

The Islamic culture contributed many great accomplishments to the world. The unified many different groups and made great strides in terms of art, literature, and philosophy. Their era served as a bridge to the modern age. The culture of Islam is complex and beautiful.
I would have to say that their biggest accomplishment was the religion itself extending. The religion unified many forming a strong force. With this force they were able to conquer vast lands and soon form an empire. As the religion grew it spread all over the middle east conquering people's beliefs making it a popular one.
I agree with the last comment about the religion being important. Islam became a movement that reached so many people and its impact was lasting throughout the years. The Qur’an was the most important document, because it formed what the Islamic culture and the architecture of the people represent. All the things that make up Islam came from this piece of literature.
The most important accomplishment of the Islamic civilization would be their contribution to developing philosophy, arts, science, and literature. In ancient civilizations, its thanks to Islam that philosophical and scientific advancements were presented to neighboring societies, who continued to spread the word. Many writings from Islamic backgrounds also influenced Christians and their thinking when they read the texts. Many world famous historic pieces of architecture were built by people with an Islamic background. Islamic architecture brought together several different backgrounds and incorperated their styles into their own work.
The most important contribution Islamic civilization gave to the world was Islam. That goes without saying. A single banner under which millions of people can unify under. Every other thing that the civilization gave pales in front of this juggernaut. In fact, when i mentioned it, 15 billion things in the world just became more awesome. I don't see why anyone mentioned the 800 pound gorilla. Islam, along with christianity,. shaped the western world. The last time that a religion did something like that was, well, when this happened.
