Exit Ticket - Spartacus, part IV

Here is an easy blog to answer. Now that we are almost done with the movie, give me your impressions of the movie. Aside from the "hokey" nature, are you enjoying the film? Are you learning anything from it? Do you think there is enough historical accuracies to make it worth spending a week watching it in class?

Have Fun!

Ok, well today I guess I'll try to be first. I think that the movie is pretty good, especially for the time period it was made. I think I am learning alot from it, especially great Roman characters who were important to its history. I do think that it was pretty historically accurate, but not enough accuracy to replace the oh-so-wonderful class taught by Yip the Great. It gives the movie watcher a bit of insight to see how life was lived back then, especially for slaves and also for the wealthy. It is good, and you should definitly do this for all the years to come.

i am really enjoying this movie. it was a lot better than what i expected. i thought it was going to be dumb and boring but it was quit enjoyable. it didn't really have all those drawn out love scenes. they were there but not so drawn out. also it was historically accurate enough to watch for a whole week. they had real people and they had events that were accurate enough. some parts, like the part where he chopped off the warrior's arm and blood shot out like a fountain, that just were so fake that i laughed so much it hurt. all in all, it was a good enough movie for history class.

i dont thyink it was really worht spending a week watching. i really didnt learn much about rome. dave was right when he said that the characters were important but i dont think its a good thing to be shown. as a side note, this was directed by the same guy who did 2001; a space oddesey, dr. strangelove, the shining and clockwork orange

This movie is really giving me an accurate idea of what this time in history was like. Watching the movie helps me learn about Rome's history in a visual way rather then just trying to memorize information. Watching the movie IS NOT BORING, and I am enjoying it! I completely disagree with Alex, this is a way of learning about people and history which the class can enjoy at the same time.

I believe Sarah's comments completely. I am really enjoying this film and the content from the movie definately demonstrates the life of the Romans through the great visual that the movie depicts. It is definately worth watching for a movie. It is a interesting movie that keeps you engaged in Rome's history instead of keeping your nose in a book and trying to memorize it like Sarah said. Don't get me wrong, I like reading but not all the time. This makes it more interesting to learn. So it is definately worth watching for a week.

I also believe Spartacus was a rather good movie. I didn’t learn a ton about Rome, but I sure learned a lot about Spartacus. For its time period, like Dave said, it was a rather good movie. With that said at times we may all agree that some parts were silly, and draw out with terrible acting. Enjoyable things in this movie were the war scenes, the partial nudity, the war scenes, and bad acting. Things un-enjoyable, first and for most men bathing each other and talking about bisexuality, (not for me), drawn out scenes that forced us to fast forward, then lack of gore, and only partial nudity.

I am enjoying watching this movie. I believe it is good enough to spend a whole week on. I'll be honest, when I first heard that we were gonna spend a week watching this movie I wasn't too thrilled because I have a hard time sitting still and focusing. However, watching the movie was enjoyable. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be, it was actually easy to follow and fun to watch. Some parts were sort of dragged out, but besides that I believe the movie was worth watching for a week. It was historicaly acurate to spend a whole week on. I think it was good to watch the movie, it gave a change to the way we learn, and still had enough information for us to benefit from it. I also agree with Dave when he said the movie was good for the time period it was made. Granted, were used to seeing alot of special affects and a good picture, but for the time this movie was made, it was good. Overall this movie was enjoyable and worth watching.

Sparticus was a very learnitive movie. It really showed me what it was like to live in Rome at the time. I wasn't aware of all the corruption In the government that existed in Rome and how massive the dispute between the patricians and the plebeians (the slaves) I really like the movie so far and even though there have been some very questionable scenes and other scenes that were really drawn out, I think it's a pretty actiony movie. Except for the fake arm chop scene which was funny!

Yip dog this is my kind of blog. What I liked most in the movie was the part when the slaves all stood, and proclaimed themselves as Spartacus. This was exciting to me because I have always wondered where they came up with that Pepsi commercial. I also learned more about the important characters such as Crassus. I learned about their motives and intentions. Spartacus was the ideal leader for the slaves because he would do anything to save his wife and future child from a certain death. A man who has everything to lose is the most dangerous.

I think overall I enjoyed the movie so far it. It was a good way to see how Rome functioned during this time period. I am learning about how the Roman government would function when it was shown the slave problem. I think there defiantly were enough historical facts to show the movie because it does a good job showing how dictatorship was in Rome when faced with a big enough problem.

To start it off I think any movie is good enought to spend a week watching in school. It was an okay movie, probably a good movie for the time it was made. I can't see my family watching it on a friday night but it did have some good historical information which made it worth watching. The movie was pretty entertaining and had it's moments. I thought overall it was worth sacrificing a week in order to watch this movie. If I can make a suggestion Mr. Yip, I heard another history class was watching Gladiator. We should watch this movie the week we come back from vacation and then make a comparison based on the historical signifigance. This is a good idea not only becasue Gladiator is an awesome movie, but it can get us to try and make connections based on what we have watched and learned.

Even though the movie is very cheesey I do like it. And for this movie to be made in the 60's (I think) it's really not that bad. Also, although it may not be completely accurate, I think it gives a pretty good sense of what it was like to live at that time in Rome. To add on I really liked the part when Spartacus cut the guy's arm off. Finally, I agree with Tom that I was glad when finding out where the "I'm Spartacus" commercial came from.

Its a fun way to learn a few things about Rome. You've got your characters, your problems, and the significant events that occurred. I learned about the rebellion of the slaves, and some of Rome's disadvantages. The scences also gave me a somewhat image of the Roman times which I enjoyed the most.

I think that the movie was pretty good seeing as how it was made in the 1960's or something. The cutting arm part was really cheesy but there were some prreeeetttttttyyyy nice scenese in the movie. *I'm guessing this move is like pg-13* I have learned quite a lot from this movie such as how it was like in Rome and whate they wore and there slow romatic relationships. It also shows how diverse the Romans are especiall Crassus and his bisexuality. I think that this movie has enough historical accuracies but even without it i think its worth spending a week watching it in class!

P.S. to Tom and Dylan I don't think I've ever seen that "I'm Spartacus" Pepsi Commercial

Just like Sarah, I think the movie is worthwhile. I am learning a lot more than I do from reading the textbook, which I think is difficult sometimes. Having the movie with the historical storyline and plot helps me to understand Roman society and how Rome was in chaos with everyone fighting each other for power. I think I could learn more from watching movies like this rather than reading it in a book. For me, spending the time on watching Spartacus was worth it. I was surprised at how much better I understood the material from the book when I saw it on the screen. I hope there are more movies to cover the rest of the material in the book.

I thought the movie was okay. The violence was somewhat cheesy, but that's good for me because I don't enjoy buckets of blood. I did learn more about the government conflicts, the two different sides, and what their goals are. The movie never mentioned anything about the roman civilians who were in a huge economic crisis. They mainly focused on the Corinthian slaves fighting for freedom. When we read the book, they focused more on the romans and the system of the government. They didn't clearly explain the rivalry between Sparticus, Crassus and Grachuss. So I was learning many things, but I am not sure if they were exactly historically correct. Yes, I believe that that movie is worth spending a week on. It is really interesting, except for the parts where they take 10 minutes to watch people walk through places. It was also good to take a break from lectures that everyone interrupts, so we never are actually in the place where we are supposed to be note and reading wise. :)

i think that this movie isnt that bad. it seems like it captures a element of the actual event. though it creates some fictional aspects, they do not distract from the history of it. spartacus was an interesting individual and was portrayed as very honorable and just. the part where the guys arm is cut off was incredibly funny. spartacus also has tons of good pick up lines. cant wait to see how it ends.

I find the movie very relevant. Although the affects and sets are dated I still find the movie extremely educational. It really shows what it was like in Rome at that time. The movie has a very apparent resemblance to Brave Heart. I think there are many great action scenes in this movie as well as sentimental. Overall I also think the plot is interesting. I am enjoying the movie.

I was really enjoying the movie. Aside from the fact that the movie is old and corny, its a hood movie to watch. Its cool how the army Spartacus created were made up of gladiators and slaves. One thing you can learn from this movie is that Rome has parts that can be taken over, but they are able to defeat all their enemies with more soldiers.

i absolutely love this movie. it may not have the testosterone fueled fury of gladiator, but the subtltey of the characters, the importance, in every gesture, in every breath, that is acting. That is exactly what this movie does.

I think this film was totally worth spending a week in school to watch it, however since I had to watch it at home, that doesn’t apply. Although I would have rather done other things then spend my free time watching an old actiony movie, I do think it was informative although not completely accurate and it helped me to understand some of the things we went over in class. Things made more sense after watching them in a movie vs. listening to Mr. Yip and Cam discuss them in a way that makes me wonder what Cam does with his free time.
