Reading, p. 108-112, The Culture of Classical Greece

Finally a new blog for you guys to do! We will skip the "before" stuff and simply have you think about what you are reading.

You have read about Greek philosophy and learned that there was a major philosophical movement led a group of teachers called the Sophists. In addition, there were three major philosophers who differed from the Sophists: Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. After reading about their different beliefs and approaches to life, ask one question of a Sophist, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

Please post your four (4) questions by Monday, December 8.

Plato question: Why do you think that the three levels of society in The Republic (with the Aristocrats in the top ruling spot) is better than a Democracy for a better ethical society?

Sophist question; Since you believe understanding the universe is too complex for human minds, what are you ideals about the universe since to you nothing is absolutly wrong or right?

Socrates question; If it were really true that all knowledge lies within us, then why is a formal education needed today?

Plato; Which do you value more, your philosophy's or the construction of The Republic?

Aristotle; Why did you believe only a constitutional goverment would truly work? The other forms of government could also have easily worked.

Sophist: If there is no absolute right or wrong, then do you believe there is no absolute good or evil?

Socrates: Was your death worth teaching your pupils? Since you did not write anything down, did you know your teachings would get you into trouble?

Aristotle: Your interests were analyzing and classifying based on thorough research and investigation. Then why do you belive woman are inferior to men? I think through research and investigation you could see that for human life to survive there is a balance, men need woman and woman need men.

Plato: Did you come up with your explanation of a higher world of eternal forms from socrates teaching method or did Socrates himself belive in this and taught it to you?

Sophist: If you believed that there was no absolute right or wrong, was there anything else you believe in?

Socrates: Since you did not charge for your teachings to others, would lack of money be the reason for not leaving any writings? Or did you not have somewhere to keep them so they would last? Do you believe in the writing system?

Plato: Why did you distrust the democrative ways in Athens, since its been of good use?

Aristotle: It's not clear to me why you would think women are inferior to men, knowing that without the other part, life would be impossible to populate. Another words, men themselves without women would not be able to make life. Or, did you mean that women are inferior to men by other means such as strenght? What are your reasons to this conclusion?

Sophist: If there was no right and wrong, how did you percieve the fact the you were doing the correct thing preaching to the younger generation of Athens and such?

Socrates: If you believed that "the goal of education was to improve the individual," then wouldn't writing teachings and lessons down improve the self more?

Plato: If Socrates was your master, where did the thought of writing things down come from? Also, how were your thoughts about the world different then his if you were his disciple?

Aristotle: What was your reasoning in saying that a constitutional government was the best? Also, what were your reasons and evidence supporting your claim stating that women were inferior to men in the community and in marriage?

Just a random question about Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato: If they all learned the same ideals and ideas about the generations before them, how come each of their opinions and main thoughts were all different and led in different directions?

Sophist: If you don't believe in right or wrong then what do you believe in? Also, what do you think would be the best values for a stable society?

Socrates: You believe the real goal of education was to better the individual. If you were to go to the future with the same morals, what would you criticize about our education system? Do you believe there is even a purpose to it, if it’s not truly bettering the individual and not letting the students learn from the knowledge within us?

Plato: Did you ever reach or come close to the goal of philosophy?

Aristotle: Why/what made you believe that women were inferior to men? Since coming from Athens you never gave women the chance to present their true abilities, So how can you generalize that they’re so inferior compared to men?

To answer Peter's sophist question I think Sophist would say that he believed there was no right or wron because what was right and what was wrong was just someones opinion.

To answer Kelly's Socrates question I think Socrates would say that althoough knowledge lies with in us, you can always gain more knowledge.

To answer Eddy's Aristotle question I think that Aristotle would say that although it was true that men needed women to reproduce but women also needed men to reproduce. I think he would say this because he was from a male-dominated society.

To answer Kyle's Plato question I think Plato would say that he agreed with Socrates teaching because there ideals were similar which meant that Socrates probably influenced him a little bit.

I'm answering Dylan's question
Socrates- Did you value teaching your students more than your life?
I believe Socrates would have said yes because he died because of his teaching. He believed the students should obtain thier knowledge through critical guidance. Therefore I believe teaching the pupils meant everything to him.

I'm answering Ramzi's question:
Socrates: How did you remember your teachings if you did not write them down?

I belive Socrates would say that he would remember his teachings becuase it was his passion. I believe he would mention that teaching the youths was bringing out the knowledge within us. Even though he did not write down his teaching, it was his passion and that shouls be good enough.

I'm answering Eddie's question:
Sophist question: Why did you believe in the ideal that interprets there is no absolute right or wrong?

I belvie Sophist would say that he beleived in that ideal becuase he truly thought there was not enough information to conclude what was wrong and what was right. He choose to beleive this. His beleif, is almost like an opinoin. So, other people might have different belifes as to some things may be right and some may be wrong. It's his belief, and his way of life, so I think it was just bases on the fact he thought not enough knowldege was behind the statement about the universe.

I'm answering Bryan's question
Plato: Why were you so facinated with the question of reality?

I believe Plato was so facianted with reality because reality sparks many questions. Reality has to do with your exsistance, and whats happening in the world around you. Even today many people ponder reality, and never quite get answers. I think Plato would be espicially fascinated with reality because in his time not many advances were made. There life was very simple compared to ours, giving Plato more to ponder in my opinoin because reality is such an alborate topic.

I'm answring Matt O's question:
Aristotle Question: Why did you favor constitutional government?

I beleive Aristotle favored Constitutional government becuase the other two had more flaws. The book mentions that he thought monarchy could easily be turned into a tyranny and that aristocracy into oligarchy. He also mentions constiutional govenrment was the best form for most people.

Answers:

Katelyn's Question (Sophist): Why do you think society believed that your way of thought regarding “there is no absolute right or wrong” was a poor influence on the young?

-I believe that they believed that it was a poor influence because it taught children that they have the freedom to do whatever they wanted. This was incorrect because no one is truly free.
Since there was no right or wrong a child could murder someone without it being wrong, but it also doesn’t make it right.

David's Question (Socrates): If you believed that "the goal of education was to improve the individual," then wouldn't writing teachings and lessons down improve the self more?

-I would have to say no. I am already improving myself by remembering my thoughts and actions; there is no need to write them down if I didn't want to share my thoughts with the whole world. I don't need to do so to improve myself.

Kyle's Question (Plato): What did you think of your teacher Socrates? Did you agree with his teaching? Why or why not?

-I thought he was a great man, and didn't deserve the fate he received. I agree with most of them, if you are not learning to better yourself then what are you learning? if it doesn't help you someway in life then why do you even bother learning it? His questioning of authority led me to distrust of Athenian democracy. They went against their rules when sentencing him to death; Athens was supposed to have a tradition of free thought and inquiry.

Matt's Question (Aristotle): Why did you favor constitutional government?

-I favored constitutional government because of its order. To have order you need restrictions, and writing them down makes it easier for the citizens to follow them. So, because of this you are getting and orderly government where the most of the citizens listen.

Im answering Peters question to Aristotle.
I believe that the fact that Aristoltle was a guy affected his thoughts about woman. I believe that Aristotle would say that being a guy did in fact affect that way he looked at women. If he thought that guys were better he obviously is talking in favor of his gender therefore the fact he was a male affected his thinking about women being inferior.

Katelyn Connor said...

Peter's question-What are your personal reasons as to your distrust to Athenian Democracy?

Plato believed that the Athens people could not achieve an ethical life unless they were in a “just” state. His Republic described the three ruling classes that would make up this form. Aristocrats would be the people to rule in Plato’s best and just state. The Athens way of freedoms for all classes was not up to his standards of who should be the group overseeing the general government. Plato must not have trusted the ordinary people to run a government with ethics and morals for the good of the state.

Katelyn Connor said...

Answering Peter's question on Aristotle-Do you think that you being a male affects your thoughts on women being inferior to males?

Since Aristotle used inductive reasoning as his basic thinking to solve anything (scientific method) it would seem that the conclusions would be free from bias. However, he may not have considered all the evidence from all sources in his information gathering. His data may have not included information about women so that may have made him form an improper conclusion.

Katelyn Connor said...

Answering Matt O. Plato Question: Do you feel you were a better philosopher than you master, Socrates? Explain.

No. I learned a great deal from Socrates’ methods of questioning and then was able to expand on his teachings to form my own questions and ideas on such things as government. My work, The Republic may have never been created if I was not a student of Socrates.

Katelyn Connor said...

Answering Matt O. Sophist Question: If you believed that there was no absolute right or wrong, then why did you think that understanding the universe was beyond the reach of the human mind?

The study of human behavior and the art of persuading people to think of both sides of an issue leads to true wisdom which is the most important thing in order to improve oneself. People can’t understand the universe, but they have the capabilities to improve on their own ways of thinking.

Katelyn Connor said...

Answering Matt O. Socrates Question: Do you regret becoming a philosopher because of your fate? Explain.

No. “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Questioning everything, including authority is the only way for people to improve themselves. People have the answers inside their own minds already, and to educate them about how to find this process out is most important.

Sophists: If there was no truth, then there are only lies. If lies existed alone, then said lies became truth. So if i said that "the sky is an orange purple and blue squirrel with 60989 tails(hypothetically), then would that become true, or real?

Socrates: Why were your teachings not written down? For memorizations sake?

Aristotle: If men needed women, why did men hold higher positions in your society?

Plato: Do you have any strong beliefs on the failures of your mentor? If you saw the school of Athens painting, do you think it accurately describes the beliefs of her inhabitants?
