After reading p. 16-23 in your text, complete the "before, during, and after" reading posts. You can format this blog in three sections:
Section 1: your prior thoughts on what is a civilization and
Section 2: how similar/different are your thoughts compared to the author.
Section 3: what are the important points you need to know to succeed
Think about what I have been teaching you concerning the interactions with the text. Section 1 would concern the "Before" reading, section 2 would concern "During" reading, and section 3 would concern the most important information. In fact, you may head each section as "Before" "During," and "After."

What I know about ancient Egypt is extreamley limited. All I know is that they built the pyrimids and were ruled by a pharoh. ( I know that it isn' t spelled right but my iPod doesn' tbave spell check) they had slaves and cleopatra was a queen at some point. The only reason I know this is is because of the come back " don't be cleopatra, queen of denile.
Before - I don't know much about egypt civilization. I know that they worshiped the gods, like the sun god, Rah. Their gods were animal like, and quite terrifying.
They made the pyramids by hand and used them as tombs for their pharohs and other richer people. They took the transition from life to death very seriously. Thats why they put many expensive things in their tombs. They believed it would bring a better afterlife. I also saw in a movie that they killed babies, Im not really sure if thats true or not. Their pharohs were like kings. That's basically all I know or think I know.
During - during the reading I found out that the egyptians were very civiized. They used the nile river alot and were a river civilization. They had many boundaries around Egypt which protected them from most invasions.
The author mentioned historians separating the time of egypt into periods, which were called the old, middle and new kingdoms. I also discovered that Egypts government was well organiaed, and soemwhat like our own. In my previous blog I had a couple of things right about egypt. Theu believed in many gods including the sun god Re (I spelt it wrong before) they were serious about the journey to the afterlife. And that the pharohs were kings.
some more different things the author mentioned were the society of egypt, basically teh social classes and the economy. how they used the nile river to trade. Egypt was a very rich civilization.
The author also talked abpout the whole culture of egypt. the author ended talking about wgypt with marriges and how the men always had control, and the purpose of marrying was to reproduce.
Before
Before reading these pages I did not know much about the Egyptians. All I know is that they built the Pyramids and were ruled by the all powerful Rah. I at least think all the Egyptians look like people slash dogs. They also have a huge population of slaves and rulers
During
While reading these pages I learned about the extreme importance of the Nile River and all the great resources it creates and naturally brings it is also the largest population around it in the world. No other river ahs as many tribes or villages on it due to its abundant resources and livable grounds. Also many spiritual things such as the many hieroglyphics, priest carvings or sacred writings.
After
After reading these pages I learned that not only were the Egyptians very technologically advanced in the building of the pyramids but they were also very culturally advanced in things such as writing, paintings, and status. I also noticed the Old and Middle Kingdoms the old Kingdoms took place in 3100 B.C.E. the first Egyptian royal dynasty, under a king called Menes. The Old Kingdom took place between 2686 to 2125 B.C.E. it was the age of prosperity and splendor.
After-
the improtant ideas in this section were:
the egypts had the gift of the nile, and used it to its full potential.
Egypt also had barriers surrounding egypt.
the old kingdom (2686 - 2125 bce)
during this time the kings or pharohs were looked at as gods. they were just creating their government.
The middle kingdom - (2055-1650bce) called "The Golden Age" they reorganized their form of governtment. pharohs werent looked at as gods any more.
New Kingdom - (1550-1085 bce)- a war caused the middle kingdom to end and the new kingdom to begin.
during this time the egyptian empire was changed. a girl was a pharoh and dominated all teh other ones by sending out military expeditions, building temples, and encouraging mining and agriculture.
becuase of the war the Egyptians found out ways to make many new things such as bronze tools and weapons. another pharoh, amenhotep aka akhenaten tried to make a religious change and failed since the egyptians were so attatched to their old one. by the end of the new kingdom egypt became very rich.
Society
upper class - the king, nobles and preists
middle class - merchants and artisans
lower class - serfs and common people who worked the land.
Culture
Religion - they were very attatched to their religion, worshiped many different gods, that had animal features.
The Pyrimids - one of the greatest acheivments of egypt. they were large buildings dedicated to the dead. only the upper class were buried in there. the pyrimids were made by hand.
Art and Writing - Art was mostlt spiritual. they made art for performances and rituals. sculptures were put in tombs to help assist the deceased journey to the afterlife.
Egyptians used hieroglyphics as a way of writing. they made paintings and carvings in walls that showed the story. they later invented their own way of actual writing.
Marriage -
the purpose of marrying was to have kids. the egyptians wanted boys becuase they carry on the family name. The men were in charge of the relationships, but were supposed to give the women whatever they wanted. marriages often ended in divorce, like they do today.
Before-I dont know much about Egypt civiliztion but if im right they had leaders called pharaohs which ruled a kingdom, they built pyromids for themselves, their gods where animal like looks and they believed in the afterlife.
During-They depended on the river a lot for that was what created the fertile lands to grow crops.I learned that they divided Egyption history into 3 major periods. Our thoughts are mostly the same about the religion for most of the gods where they had animal like features such as a falcon head. The pyramids were great structures that were built for pharaohs.
After-the important points is
-they very much depended on the nile which gave them fertile lands to grow crops
-Old Kingdom was around 3100-2686 BCE and the king was called Menes
-Middle kingdom started around 2055-1650 BCE and their ideas started to change
-New Kingdom was around 1550-1070 BCE and one pharaoh was a women
-Society had an upperclass which consisted of nobles and priests and below the upper class they had merchants and artisans and the lower classes consisted of serfs or common people
-Their culture had a lot of gods and could be divided into two groups the sun gods and land gods and they had pyrimads which were apart of their culture which were for great pharaohs
-Arts and wrting consisted of wall painting and statues of gods and kings and their writing where called hieroglyphics meaning sacred writing
-Marriage and family which egyptians had a positive attitude to had people mostly marry young people and could have more then one wife if the first one was childless
before
most of the things i know about egypt came from my hebrew school. i know tha the eqyptions built pyramids and they used slaves to help them do it. i know the egyptions were intelligent because their pyramids use lots of complecated math to get to that perfect point at the top.
during
iknew the nile river was important to egyption civilization, but i didn't know how important. also, i didn't know the whole purpose of marrige was to reproduce. what happened to love? also i thought it was really cool how they talked about their gods being animal-like.
after
important points:
the importance of the nile river
the old kingdom (2686 - 2125 bce)
differet levels in society
marrige=reproduction
art and writing (hyrogliphics)[i probably spelled that wrong]
i learned a lot in this section. i learned that there were three different kingdoms or times of peace and order. they had a pharaoh and a system of government. they were protected on all sides by desert. what i think is important to know is when the three kingdoms were. another is who was king and how were they killed. also when they were invaded is important.
Before- I know a little about Egypt. I know a few of their gods, Ra, Isis, Set, and Anubis. They built pyramids for their dead pharoh's, but i belive later on because of grave robbers they began to build the tombs in hidden mountain sides. Their mumification methods also kept the mummies well preserved.
During-The Egyptian history was divided into three periods of political power seperated by periods of unstable government and fighting for power. Historians called these the old kingdom, the middle kingdom and the new kingdom.
After-I did not know that the Egyptian history was divided into three seperate time periods. They had a really good empire. They were also very advanced at architecture, which you can see from looking at the pyramids. Another thing that i rembered is the book of the dead, it wasn't mentioned in the reading but i would like to know more about it.
Before: I don't know a lot about Egypt. I know that they built pyramids, made mummys, and worshipped the gods. I knew that they were led by Pharos
During:In the reading, the author presents ideas that show that the Egyptians were very civilized and culturally advanced. They made extravagent pyramids that were used to hold the tombs of important/wealthy Egyptian people and expensive artifacts. They made use of the Nile River for trading purposes and were very economically rich.
After: My knowledge of the ancient Egyptian civilization has expanded after reading this passage. Not only were the Egyptians rich with money, resources, and material things, they were rich in culture as well. Many artistic artifacts have been found. Therefore, the ancient Egyptians were extremely civilized.
before: I know that the Egyptians were ruled by a god-king called the pharaoh. they were apparently advanced in terms of engineering, seeing as they built the pyramids. They were religious and had gods that were mixes between men and animals. And they had really advanced chariots to carry there army.
During: the Egyptians had abundant food because the poorly named “black land” provided the (relatively) small nation with food. They didn’t have to worry about the invasion as there were deserts in their east& west and cataracts in the south. They were ruled by a pharaoh, who was viewed as a god and a Sheppard for the people. Their entire society was intertwined with religion, and they had a large pantheon of gods& myths. Their art was entirely religious. Men& women had a greater decree of equality, with women being able to keep their property and largely do what men did
After: you need to remember that:
• Egypt was fertile do to heavy rain in central Africa which caused the nile to overflow and allow a fertile soil buildup
• Their society was highly religious to a point were tyeh had no word for religion.
• During the old& middle kingdoms, they were contained, but the new kingdom saw expansion to a militaristic state.
• Their kings were gods and their religion was afterlife-centric.
• The old kingdom was between 2686bce-2125bce ythe beginning of Egyptian culture.
• Middle kingdom: golden age
• New kingdom: age of war
• Relative equality between men and women.

Before reading; I didnt really know much about Egypt except the Nile river was in it and so were pyramids.
During Reading; I learned alot more such as they had different kingdoms. I also learned they had a positive outlook on life. Marriages were also appeared to be arranged by parents. I also learned they were very civilized.
After Reading;
-There was flooding, but it was a "miracle"
-They had a surplus of food
-had different kingdoms
-they were very civilized
Before: i knew that egypt relied on the nile river. they built gerat pyramids as mausoleums to great pharohs and priests. their written language was heiroglyphs. they had mythological beliefs about gods shaped in animal images.
During: they were very dependent on the river because they did not get a lot of rain. so their agriculture was riverside. they had natural boundries against invaders.
After: i learned that they were very religious. i also learned that they did get alot of rain. they married just to reproduce and they had an almost equality between men and women.
Before: The most I can make of egypt is that they were a very powerful civilization that built many advanced structures for their time. They built large temples for their important people.
During:I learned that the Nile river was of extreme importance to them and was a major transportation route and trade. This was like their highway of today because it was what allowed people to get knowledge and all sorts of things to the villages of egypt. They had a very organized government with a king as the supreme ruler. They were very into religion and the whole afterlife and the gods.
After:I learned that the egyptians like many early world civilizations were ahead of their time. An example would be their impressive building styles. They believed in the afterlife and the richest and most powerful people were given elegant burials. The Egyptians had a language that was written and was drawn through pictures.
Before: When I think about Egypt I first think about pyramids, desert, and that funky dance with the pointing foward and backward with one hand. Regarding Egypt civilization I know it was more like a monarchy where 1 pesron, the pharoh (ro however you spell it), ruled over everyone. I alos know that the high up class of people got buried with their most prized possessions because they belived in a after-life.
During: i think the author has a quite more knowledgable grasp on Egyptian civilization. I think that the Egyptian civilization now and I think the author would agree with me sayig Egypt was a good example to follow when stating a new civilization. With its art and knowledge it was a very prosperous civilization.
After: The imporant thing you need to know is Egypt civilization was a civilization a little bit ahead of its time with extreme death rituals and their leadership ability.

Before-
Egyptian civilization must of been rough times back then. Although they created many magnificent artifacts and such that are viewed today learning more about that group. There were obviously kings, slaves, ect. Kings were opulent and were considered the greatest, while the slaves built pyramids and worked their lifes for their king. Its amazing how one person could overule so many people.
During-
I wasn't really aware that Egypt was a river valley civilization. I mostly thought it was all desert.I never knew about egyptian farmers as well, and now that i'm thinking about it it never occured to me where they got their food source.
After-
It's interesting to know how specific they were with everything, especially the mummifying process, which takes around 70 days. This shows egypt was an organized civilization.
Before: When I think of Egypt, I think of Pharaohs, vast deserts, I think of many rituals, I think of mummies, and elaborated pieces of art. I know that the gods were based on animals and that they ruled all of Egypt as an Absolute Monarchy.
During: Well without speaking, obviously the author has a more detailed desription of the Egyptian Society than I do.
After:
surpluses of food grown in fertile valley, this made Egypt prosperus.
The Nile made transportation and communication easier.
Egypt had natural barriers that fostered isolation unlike Mesopotamia. This augmented the sense of security and concluded them farther away from an invasion. This didn't prevent the development of trade though.
Modern historians divided Egyptian History into 3.
Old, Middle, and new kingdom.
Papyrus used as paper for writing. They were called Hieroglyphics.
Egyptian art presented a distinctive experience for 1000 years.
Bronze in making tools and weapons from Hyskos.
Mastered skills of Horse drawn Chariots from the Hyskos.
The purpose of Marriage was to have kids so they can be future precedents of their family. They always wanted men to represent the family.
Katelyn Connor (Period 4)
Before: A civilization is an organized community of people working together to successfully use available land, talents and ideas to make a better lifestyle. Having an organized form of government, developing a society with a unique culture, help to keep people loyal and unified in the cause of working towards the common goal of creating a successful community where its people are living a safe, happy and healthy life.
During: The author shows that the physical landscape was important in the Egyptian civilization. I agree that the land where people settle is an advantage if it produces what the Nile did for the Egyptians. The Nile brought powerful advantages to their success in developing a civilization.
After: Depending on the Nile River for its development, Egyptian civilization was successful because of this famous river in its physical landscape. Transportation, communication, a barrier to threats, and fertile farm land was given by the Nile River which gave an advantage to the development of Egypt’s wealth as a civilization. The Egyptian people were spiritual and the pyramids are familiar to many as the tombs that celebrated the power of their rulers. Art and writing were also spiritual with focus on the afterlife, and promoted the beliefs and rituals of the culture.
Sarah Kelley- Period 4
Before Reading- Before reading, my ideas of early civilizations in ancient Egypt were very vague. I did believe that the Nile River was essential to the development of the communities in this area. The Egyptians were well known for their pyramids, and their famous leaders.
During Reading- During the reading I realized that the Nile River, as I had predicted, was beneficial to the people of Egypt. Egypt was a river valley civilization. These people were skilled for their time, which is demonstrated through their technical achievements. Like other civilizations we have studied, Egypt had a writing system and created art.
After Reading- After reading I learned that modern historians divided Egyptian history into three periods, the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. Egyptian society was organized along hierarchical lines with god-king at the top. The ruling class ran the government. The Egyptions were polytheistic and had gods associated with heavenly bodies and natural forces. Their views toward life were generally positive. They encouraged young marriage, and establishing a home and family sooner rather than later.
Before- I don’t really know that much about Egypt other than what is said on TV or in books which is that they were ruled by a man who the people called the pharaoh and that they built pyramids with the aid of the Jewish people whom they enslaved.
During- the Egyptians based most of their survival on the river the Nile and the nutrients to form crops came from that river. Ancient Egypt was split into three very basic time periods the old kingdom the new kingdom and the middle kingdom (not in that order). The Egyptians gods were really strange to me. Why would you want to worship a guy who’s got human body and an animal head?
After- the important points to remember is that the Egyptians were not just some guys who ordered around a bunch of slaves to move a big block to put on top of the last one. They were a civilized people who farmed in their fertile soil (which I found surprising because I thought that Egypt was on e big dessert) and built extravagant pyramids so that they would be remembered as a great people.
B4- I knew that Egypt had pyramids, and had pharos and gods who like like birds. I knew that they made their pyramids from slaves, and used them to bury important people and their things. I also know that they lived on the Nile, which allowed them to become succesful in trading and becoming powerful.
During-I was right about pharos and pyramids, but i didnt realize what a big factor the influence of their gods were. Because of the gods, they built pyramids to mummify their dead so their spirits will be happy. Also, i didnt know that there were three seperate Kingdoms in which Epypt fell and rose again to acheive new heights.
After- I found out that Egyptianhs were a very complex people who were very intelligent. The Nile River was the key reason why the Egyptian civilization succeded. It allowed transportation to and from upper and lower egypt, and most importantly, it supplied arable land when it flooded annualy. The Egyptians believed in two main gods, Amon-Re, the god of the sun, and Osiris and Isis, river and land gods. There were three kingdoms. The Old, the Middle and the new Kingdom. During the old Kingdom, Menas, a king, united Upper and lower egypt into one egypt. The pyramids were of great pride to the egyptians and were burial tumes for pharos and the upper class. Egyptians had a form of writing called hieroglyphics, even though there was no established alphabet. In the new kingdom, Akhrnaten tried to change the religous way but failed for everyone was so used to the gods they previously worshiped.
Before-Egypt was Ruled by a pharaoh, and they're gods were animal like. They invented a picture writing system, and They made pyramids
Matt Hoey:
My thoughts on what a civilization is, is a community of people who work together for food and survive on each other's help. They also govern themselves and try new things to make their lives better.
What i knew was how the egyptians built the pyramids by themselves, and how they used the Nile river to their advantage. I didnt know how important going to the afterlife was for them. They would bury themselves with gold and their fortune thinking they would have it in the after life.
What i learned was how sophisticated the egyptians were. they had hyroglyphics, and many different levels of society. One thing i thought was interesting was how the Nile river flows north because the northern part of egypt is actually the lower part of it.
"continuing Last One, Sorry"
During- The Nile was a Life Source for The egyptians, and they dependedon it for many many things. Egyptian history is separated into three parts, old kingdom, middle kingdom and new kingdom. they built gianttombs called pyramids that held pharoahs and other rich people.
After- I learned that Egypt was Extremely advanced, and that nowadays, we underestimate they're sophistication. Cleopatra was queen during the time of rome, and was married to crtain roman generals.
Before- I only know a little about Egypt and taht was about the great pyramids and the Nile River.
During- The Egypotians were a very family oriented civilization, the parents always had a say in what the children did such as marriage.
After- The floodings in these parts were considered holy and blessed and they were very civilized and they had surpluses of food.
