China blog

After reading p. 65-70 in your text, complete the "before, during, and after" reading posts. You can format this blog in three sections:

Section 1: your prior thoughts on what is a civilization and

Section 2: how similar/different are your thoughts compared to the author.

Section 3: what are the important points you need to know to succeed

Think about what I have been teaching you concerning the interactions with the text. Section 1 would concern the "Before" reading, section 2 would concern "During" reading, and section 3 would concern the most important information. In fact, you may head each section as "Before" "During," and "After."

Before: I think my thoughts on civilization is anything that is an orginized society and proivdes for itself. I think cizilization can be prmitize as long as it has a system in place that provides for the people of the civilization.
During: I think i don't exactly ahve the same thoughts as the author. When it comes to China's civiliztion it all came down to land and how high up in society you were, not nessarily how you provided for your people.
After: The key point to remember are to have a strong food source, lots of land, strong people, and a strong leader to have a successful civilization.

Edward Cummins:
Before- Civilization is a society that lives together; that makes positive improvements to the environment around them and works together to survive. They work together to contribute ideas and beliefs to society so that they can determine their future as a civilization.
During: This author may differ in details and some thoughts but he basically has the same definition as I thought up. I agree with Bryan's opinion of higher society being more superior than that of other people.
After: You need fertile land, strong warriors which China possessed, and a great surplus of food in order to survive. Again, they have to consider what is best for the society so you need a wise leader to recieve that post. You need a defense against natives and threats of the area to steal their food and land. These are key points in order to survive as a society as long as possible.

Before Reading: My prior thought of a civilization was a community of people who have a leader to support and guide them. The people of a civilization build off eachother's ideas to survive. They attempt to improve society for future generations. A civilization protects eachother and provides for eachother, as Bryan stated.

During Reading: During the reading I realized that China was founded on a series of rulers. I did believe that a civilization was generally run or founded by specific individuals. Chinese communities began as villages, but later evolved into complex and independent societies, as their knowledge of agriculture developed.
This caused peoples to migrate around China into new areas that would benefit them.

After Reading: The key characterisitcs of the Chinese civilization was the interaction between nomadic and agricultural peoples, the importance of the family as a basic unit of Chinese life, and the development of a unique system of writing. A lasting civilization is continuously striving to improve, protect itself, and provide for the people. Taking advantage of the land/enviornment you are surrounded by is also key.

Before- Before I read i thought of a civilization as beinga group of people living together in the same general area who had the same ideas.
During- I was fairly close with my guess. I was right about them having something like a community, but a left out the use of agriculture (a very important asppect). Also, the Chinese civilizations had rulers.
After- The main points were that the Chinese civilizations used agriculture, had rulers, and they were vulnerable for an attack.

Before- Before I read the section in the book I thought of a civilization as being a gruop of people living in a certain area who shared similar ideas, and had some for of government.

During- I was basically right about a civilization, except that I left out agriculture, the use of artistic sculpting, writing, and trade between civilizations.

After- The main ideas to remember are the Harappan people used agriculture, they used writing, they used sclping to make art, and they used their animals for food (since they had so many animals that had had a surplus af food) and for trading with other civilizations.

Before Reading: My thoughts of a civilization include a group of people who work together and cooperate with each other in order to survive. Based on combining similar ideas of developing a strong environment, civilization will help enhance our society.

During Reading: The author notes the most important accomplishments that characterize China’s civilization are the relationship between nomadic and agricultural people, focus on family, and the creation of a writing system. I did not put so much thought into how important families are in the development of the Chinese culture.

After Reading: It is amazing that there are only a few family names today in China because of the social structure of the original civilization - organization by clans and taking the clan name as one’s own. Although China was an agricultural society, much of its land was mountains and deserts which blocked the Chinese from advanced farming contacts in the north. The north was also a main area for conflicts.

My thoughts on what a civilization is, is a community of people who work together for food and survive on each other's help. They also govern themselves and try new things to make their lives better.
during: my thoughts were like dylan, i only left out a couple things like agriculture, land, a writing system.

After:First you need to be able to defend your land with a strong defense. you also need a good land(fertile soil) good food source, laws/punishments, ad a good writing system to help with trade.

B4-I think a civilization is a town or city with order and roles for everyone who is part of it to help make the civilization grow and prosper.

During-I noticed that the founders of China were just average farmers and hunters. None were rich or were royalty, but were just normal villagers. During the shang dynasty, the second dynasty, was ruled by an aristicratic form of government. The chinese believed in a divinieafter life, and thought that they oculd communicate with bones of animals. China's main focus was war and fighting, and used the 2 horse drawn carraige in battle, which was very similar to other fighting styles of that time.

After-Because of the tall mountains, China was isolated from the rest of Asia, while it developed its own type of agriculture, fighting techniques, religous beliefs, and many other things that were considered weird to the rest of Asia. The Chinese lived away from everyone, which is why they developed their own system of writing, which was not very helpful when it came to trade. The importance of war and family is also stressed and is one of the most important concepts of Chinese life.

Before reading- all i know about china is that it had a form of government and they lived between two rivers. I think there army was good too. A civilization is a group of people working together to survive.

Before-a civilation is a group of people believing with a similair though. All i know about china is the huang he river and the yankze river and they have a huge population.
During-China had a long line of rulers and was founded by 3 rulers. They taught the people how to do agriculture, fight and hunt. The chinese believed in an after life and their government and society was very warlike.
After-The political organization was ruled by people whoes "job" was to fight wars. The social structure was set up in clans and classes were becoming more differentiated from poor peasants to chieftains.

Before reading: I think a civilization is a group of people who share common beliefs, religiously, economically, and culturally. They have similar government, military& economic structures. All I know about china is that they had confucious, a big population& army, and they grew a lot of rice.
During reading: china was primarily agricultural, but had a series of dynasties who all had different aspects. I think the key to being a good chinesse ruler is to protect the people.
After reading: the chineese were warriors, as their word for aristocrat meant warrior, and since they were fighting until the guy who built the great wall came into power, their leaders had to be warriors. They were daoist confucist and had some form of ancestor worship

Before:
I believe that China is a very fast growing country. They are also rapidly catching up to our level of economic standards. I think of China as early civilization that didn’t have a good start because when ever I’ve herd of early world history China has never came up as one of the power house culture, unlike Mesopotamia and Egypt.

During:
India is the land of diversity because of its language, culture, and unique characteristics. In the 1920’s archaeologists discovered evidence of agricultural settlements dating back well over six-thousand years in lower reaches of the Indus River valley in modern Pakistan. Harappan civilization closely resembled the cultures of Mesopotamia and the Nile valley. Like them it probably began in tiny farming villages scattered throughout the river valley, some dating back to as early as 6500 7000 B.C.E.

After:
After reading these pages I‘ve learned that archaeological evidence has been found that suggests that the Harappans may have lived very similarly to the Sumerians of the west. There was also a extremely wide range of diversity in this early culture which is very unique for their times.

after reading:
i learned that in ancient china the Chinese originated from two neolithic groups. the Yangshao and the Longshan. they had little worries of attack when they were unified but when they had internal weakness the were vulnerable. on several occasions they were overrun. they had a unique writing system. under the shang dynasty china had a agricultural society that was ruled by military officials. official originally meant warrior but they were the primary land owners. china was known for it's skill in bronze casting. they made weapons utensils and ritual objects from bronze.

During reading- The author, like me talked about the natural barriers of china. The author mostly focused on the shang dynasty. And their government had a lot to do with war, basically what i talked about in my before section.

After reading -
Three Sovereigns (legends - mythical)
*Fu Xi - the ox-tamer who domesticated animals and introduced the beginnings of family life.

*Shen Nong- taught people the techniques of agriculture

*Huang Di- created bow and arrow, plus the writing system

Northern china
The first two Neolithic societies in china were the Yanhshao and Longshan cultures.
They mastered the art of agriculture!
They lived around the yellow river.

Southern china
-Based on the cultivation of rice, rather than millet, barley, and wheat.

Agriculture was a big party of the Chinese civilization

China had natural barriers encasing it. The Himalayas to the south, the Gobi desert covering the western side and the China Sea covering the east, which left the north open, and china vulnerable to be attacked.
A few times china was overthrown by nomadic attacking from the north.

The beginning of Chinese civilization is the Xia dynasty.
Legend says the ruler was Yu who introduced irrigation and draining the floodwater.
The Xia dynasty was replaced with the Shang dynasty (16th century bc)
They believed in gods and used oracles bones to communicate with them. Oracle bones are bones of an animal with writing on them. This was the earliest form of writing,
- Agricultural society ruled by aristocrats.
- Major occupation is war
- King ruled with a bureaucracy of chieftains.
- believed in supernatural forces
-the king is viewed as the link between heaven and earth

Veneration of ancestors- sacrifices meant to accompany the king and members of his family on the journey to the next world
-villages organized by clans
- Farming villages were a basic social unit
Upper class- chieftains, elite families, aristocrats,
Middle class- farmers’ artisans’ merchants
Lower class- slaves and peasants
- Most known for art of bronze casting, they made utensils weapons and ritual objects.
- achieved a fairly sophisticated writing system.

Before- When I think of the ancient Egypt civilization, the only thing that comes to mind is the construction of pyrimids.

During- I learned that there was much more to the Egyptians' civilization then just pyramids. The had kings (Pharaoh) and queens as a base of government,
they had many uses for writing and they had religion.

After- The most important points to remember about the Egyptian civilization is that the Nile river was of great use to them, natural barriers kept them safe from enemy attacks, they had three major time periods, and they had kings and queens.

Before
I think a civilization is any group of people that are organized and work together. As long as they have some rules to govern them even if they are simple a community can be considered a civilization.
During
China was founded on a series of rulers, it started as villages and later joined together. Also communities like china rely heavily on agriculture. In china families are very important to there culture. Also i didn't mention anything about land or writing which were main aspects in the civilization (the main 5)
After
I think some of the main points are:
-civilizations need
-a good food source
-strong people/ warriors
-lots of territory
-a civilization needs to provide for its people protect its people and work together in order to be successful.

Before-
My prior thoughts on what a civilization is is the same as before.
During-
The author goes into detail about the different groups around China. He mentions their weakness, what they were superior in, and how they survived.
After-
I as well never really thought about how some parts of China was desert but it makes sense. There were a variety of of people entering China, and trying to take more space. I didn't know about the oracle bone and how they used it to "communicate" with the gods.
Key points needed to suceed include the amount of power/authority you have, how good ur society is, and land space.

BEFORE-A Civilization is an organized society with a complex culture, specialized Labor, a system of law, and a writing system.

DURING- China seems to have the most "different" civilization, with its own customs and beliefs, while Egypt and Assyria had close contact, and The Indus Valley had some contact with the other two, so they had similiar beliefs and customs.

AFTER- The Key points of China's Shang Dynasty were vulnerable to attack, had clans, and were an agriculture based civilization.

Before- I dont know much about early chinese civilizations. I know about china's first emperor and how he united i believe the seven city states, but i think that was later on. But i do know that they will have a very different and unique culture because they were isolated from the other early civilizations.

During- The chinese started like the other civilizations, small villages and farms. But they mostly grew rice. They had some natural barriers that kept them safe at certain times.

After- The chinese had an earky writing system on animal bones in which they talked to the gods with. They also had some natural barriers but sometimes from the sea, typhoons and other storms devistated crops. Then there were the mongolians from the north that often fought for the northern border. Their government consisted of leaders who held matters over war.

Before: Anything that is a large quantity of people that live in harmony. In this civilization these people have a set of laws, a religion, a form of writing, and a large quantity of resources.

During: Ching a was a very strong civilization, they had plenty of resources from the Yangtzee and Huang He rivers. These resources provided irrigation to the crop fields sutaining their society.

After:The Chinese had big problems from an attack from some of the other people in the region such as the Monguls. They had a good government and a good crop source.

Before:
I think that the Indus valley people are there people of a very old culture that served as one of the building blocks for today’s society. And well they pretty much have to be because they were at least a participant in trade which has a huge impact on today.
During:
According to Chinese legend Chinese society was founded by a series of rulers who brought the first regiment of civilization to the region nearly 5000 years ago. Human communities have existed in china for several hundred thousand of years. Sometime around the eight millennium B.C.E. the early people living along the river banks of northern china began to master the cultivation of crops.
After:
After reading these pages I‘ve learned that most of the success was from the groups of people who lived along the river banks. I’ve also learned that historians of china have traditionally dated the beginning of Chinese civilization to the founding of Xia. Also china under the Shang dynasty was a predominately agricultural society.

Before- Before I read this section I jsut thought that it was a group of people who lived a normal life like us, and traded.

During- I kinda got the fact right that they traded alot but i didn't knwo that they needed to farm so much as it emphases in the book.

After- Some of the major points about this section was that a strong civilization, and lots of food were needed.
